Grey Gardens

Grey Gardens is the Maysles brothers' 1975 fly-on-the-wall portrait of Edith and Edie Beale, Jackie Onassis's aunt and cousin, living in genteel squalor in a crumbling East Hampton mansion. There's no narrator, no talking-head context — just two extraordinary, combative, theatrical women performing themselves for a camera they clearly adore. It's funny, sad, uncomfortable and utterly hypnotic. For anyone who loves eccentricity that refuses to apologise for itself.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love observational documentaries that let two strong-willed people talk, bicker and reminisce until their oddness becomes intimate and funny rather than merely strange.

Skip it if you need a plot or a brisk pace, since this is mostly two women in a cluttered house, talking, with long stretches of nothing much happening.

What it asks of you: Roughly ninety-five minutes of cluttered rooms, rambling anecdotes and long silences, shaped loosely and at a slow, unhurried pace.

But Darker and more disturbing than Grey Gardens; one brother's story in particular is genuinely upsetting.

The Queen of Versailles2012

A billionaire family builds America's largest house, then watches their fortune evaporate mid-construction. Same fascination with faded grandeur and people who cannot see themselves as others do.

But The subjects are less sympathetic and more nakedly acquisitive than the Beales — this is satire with real teeth.

A broke, driven amateur filmmaker in small-town Wisconsin tries to finish his horror movie against all odds. Warm, hilarious, and it never once condescends to its subject.

But Some viewers find the tone too close to laughing at rather than with its very earnest, very unglamorous star.

Titicut Follies1967

Same camera-as-witness technique and refusal of narration, but pointed at real suffering with none of the Beales' theatrical charm to soften it — the dark twin of the style.

Frederick Wiseman's banned, unnarrated documentary inside a Massachusetts asylum is the raw, uncomfortable ancestor of the observational style Grey Gardens perfected a few years later.

But Genuinely harrowing and exploitative by today's standards — this is not entertainment, it's an artifact, and it should unsettle you.

The Maysles brothers again, following door-to-door Bible salesmen through disappointment after disappointment. The same patient, unnarrated camera that made Grey Gardens feel so intimate.

But Slower and sadder, with none of the campy theatricality — this is direct cinema at its most quietly bleak.

Gimme Shelter1970

The Maysles' other masterpiece, following the Rolling Stones to the disastrous Altamont concert. Proof that their eye for real people performing under pressure works at stadium scale too.

But It's a rock documentary at heart, with a violent climax that has nothing to do with the Beales' domestic strangeness.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness2020

A modern, binge-shaped descendant of the eccentric-outsider documentary, packed with self-mythologising characters who, like the Beales, never stop performing for the lens.

But Glossier and more sensationalist, built for virality rather than intimacy — a very different kind of camera relationship.

Paris Is Burning1991

An essential documentary about New York's ball culture, full of people constructing glamour and identity out of almost nothing. The same dignity-in-performance that makes Little Edie unforgettable.

But Broader in scope and more overtly political than Grey Gardens' single-house intimacy — a different kind of film entirely.

Pink Flamingos1972

Little Edie became a genuine camp icon in exactly the drag and underground scenes Waters was filming from; both films worship performers who refuse shame about who they are.

John Waters' gleefully filthy trash masterpiece, made in the same camp spirit that later embraced Little Edie as an icon. Outrageous, cheap, and proudly, defiantly itself.

But Deliberately disgusting and shocking by design — this is fiction pushed to extremes, not a gentle documentary hangout.
