The Night of the Hunter

Charles Laughton's only film as director is a fever dream disguised as a thriller: Robert Mitchum's preacher, LOVE and HATE tattooed across his knuckles, stalks two children through a Depression-era landscape shot like German Expressionist folklore. It's slow, stylised, genuinely frightening in a way gore never manages, and unlike anything else from 1955. For people who want their horror to feel like a bad dream rather than a jump scare.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love films where menace lives in stylised shadows and storybook images, the way a bedtime tale can chill more than any blood-soaked scene.

Skip it if you want a brisk, plot-driven thriller, since this one lingers on mood and hymns and the threat moves at a slow, deliberate pace.

What it asks of you: Ninety-three minutes of deliberate, dreamlike rhythm, with long stretches of unsettling stillness that expect you to sit with dread rather than wait for things to resolve.

Mitchum again, playing a different flavour of relentless menace stalking a family — watch it to see the same actor's charm curdle into something else entirely, decades before the Scorsese remake.

But Courtroom-thriller pacing feels dated next to Hunter's dreamlike dread; it's more procedural, less nightmare.

Another story of children sensing evil in an adult before anyone else does, told through Kubrick's cold, symmetrical dread rather than Laughton's shadowy fairy-tale expressionism.

But Glacially paced by design, and its horror is psychological isolation rather than the pursuit-thriller tension Hunter offers.

Swap the preacher for the meth trade and you get the same rural-gothic engine: a resourceful child navigating adult menace in a forgotten American landscape, shot with real dirt under its fingernails.

But No stylised nightmare imagery here — it trades Hunter's poetry for grinding, unglamorous naturalism.

Both films use a child's mythic imagination to translate an unspeakable real threat — a murderous preacher, a fascist state — into folklore and shadow rather than psychology, trusting atmosphere over exposition.

A Spanish girl, haunted by Frankenstein's monster and the silent menace of Franco's regime, processes real horror through myth and imagination — hushed, amber-lit, and unforgettable if you let it work slowly on you.

But Almost nothing happens by thriller standards; it's contemplative arthouse cinema, subtitled, more interested in dread as atmosphere than as plot.
