A girl escapes a monstrous stepfather into an underground kingdom that offers her tasks, wonder, and dread in equal measure. It's gorgeous, brutal, and unwilling to protect you from either the war outside or the myth inside. Not for children, despite the marketing.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want fantasy that stays tethered to brutal history, where the monsters are as unsettling as the human cruelty around them and the imagery lingers long after.

Skip it if you need steady momentum or a clear sense of direction, since its dreamlike stretches move slowly and its violence is frank and hard to shake.

What it asks of you: Around two hours, with long, patient passages of quiet dread; it wants your full attention and tolerates no half-watching, moving between the real and the imagined without signposting.

Same structural trick: a monstrous father-figure hunting children, filmed with the heightened, symbolic logic of a fable rather than a straight thriller.

A black-and-white American classic where children flee downriver from a preacher-killer as menacing and mythic as Vidal — half thriller, half fairy tale, decades before del Toro made that combination fashionable.

But Its silent-film-influenced style and 1950s pacing will feel alien if you want modern polish.

A teenage girl enters a literal labyrinth ruled by a dangerous, seductive fantastical figure (David Bowie's Goblin King) to complete tasks and rescue someone she loves — pure 80s puppet-and-glitter fantasy.

But Deliberately campy and musical, with none of the historical horror or genuine peril — it's comfort food, not dread.
