The Curse of the Cat People

A 1944 ghost story that trades scares for melancholy. Amy, a lonely child, befriends the ghost of her father's first wife and an embittered actress—both isolated, both kind. It's tender and strange, interested in loneliness and imagination more than horror. For viewers who prefer mood and sadness to jump scares.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a quiet, moody ghost story where the dread lives in a child's loneliness and a house full of shadows, the kind of slow unease that trusts suggestion over shock.

Skip it if you need monsters, jolts and clean logic, since this one is hazy, gentle and more interested in mood than plot.

What it asks of you: Seventy minutes of slow, eerie stillness where atmosphere does most of the work and the gaps are yours to fill, with patience rewarded more than urgency.

The Innocents1961

A governess in a grand house begins to suspect the children in her care are haunted. Masterfully ambiguous: are the ghosts real or is she unravelling? Builds dread through suggestion and atmosphere rather than spectacle.

But Slow-burn psychological horror that asks you to sit with uncertainty. If you need clarity and resolution, this will frustrate you.

Portrait of Jennie1948

A struggling artist falls in love with a mysterious woman who seems to exist outside time. Ethereal and romantic, with the same melancholic supernatural tone as Cat People—grief and longing made visible.

But The framing device is clunky and the ending feels rushed. Some scenes drag noticeably, and the colour sequences are dated.

The Night House2021

A widow explores her dead husband's secrets while sensing his presence in their home. Genuinely unsettling but grounded in real grief. The ghost is less important than what it means to be alone.

But It's darker and more disturbing than Cat People—this is about trauma, not whimsy. Some may find it too bleak.

Something you would not have found on your own.

On Our Merry Way1948

Both are 1940s fantasies that locate the magical in grief and loneliness rather than adventure. Ghosts appear because people need them.

An anthology of linked stories about ordinary people experiencing small magical moments—a woman sees her dead daughter, a man finds his past. Like Cat People, it treats the supernatural as a consequence of human emotion, not spectacle.

But Episodic structure means no story gets much depth. It's obscure and hard to find, and some segments feel slight.

I Married a Witch1942

A witch curse spans centuries until a woman reincarnates to torment the descendant of the man who burned her. Playful, romantic, with Veronica Lake's luminous performance. Supernatural without being scary.

But Treated as comedy-romance now, but some magical-woman tropes feel dated. The tone is inconsistent—never quite sure what it wants to be.

Mulholland Drive2001

An amnesiac woman and a wannabe actress navigate Los Angeles while something sinister works beneath the surface. Haunting and dreamlike, about longing and delusion, with mystery that rewards your attention.

But Nearly three hours, deliberately fragmented, and the answers aren't handed over. Demands you work, and some viewers will resent that.

Pan's Labyrinth2006

A girl enters a magical world during the Spanish Civil War, encountering a faun who gives her impossible tasks. Dark fantasy where childhood wonder and adult brutality collide. Visually stunning.

But The violence is real and unsettling—this is not a fairy tale. The runtime drags slightly in the middle sections.

The Others2001

A woman and her two children live in an isolated house, plagued by mysterious presences. Atmospheric and clever, with a twist that recontextualises everything. Nicole Kidman's best performance.

But The revelation is guessable if you're paying attention. Once you know the truth, rewatching loses its power.

Crimson Peak2015

A young woman marries a mysterious nobleman and moves into his crumbling mansion, where ghosts seem to warn her of danger. Gorgeous production design, Gothic romance, and genuine atmosphere despite modern filmmaking.

But The plot is predictable and derivative. Some will see the twist coming a mile away, which undermines the scares.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane1976

A mysterious girl lives alone in a house, hiding something in the cellar. Eerie and unsettling, with Jodie Foster's performance anchoring the strangeness. Low-budget but genuinely creepy.

But Slow pacing will lose impatient viewers. The budget shows, and some performances are wooden.

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya2013

Both tell stories of otherworldly female figures who touch human hearts by being trapped between worlds. Both are about the cost of love.

A luminous animated film about a girl who falls from the sky, grows impossibly fast, and must choose between two worlds. Achingly sad, visually breathtaking, with the same melancholic tone about isolation and belonging.

But Anime will put off some viewers. It's slow, contemplative, and ends in heartbreak—no uplift here.

Hour of the Wolf1968

Both films see ghosts as manifestations of emotional need, not external hauntings. Both are about how isolation warps perception and what loneliness can conjure.

A man and his wife isolate themselves on an island, where the line between reality and hallucination dissolves. Bergman's most haunting film—surreal, psychological, genuinely disturbing. About marriage, isolation, and the ghosts we carry.

But In Swedish with subtitles. Deeply bleak and abstract—if you need plot and answers, you'll hate this. Some scenes are genuinely grotesque.
