EverAfter
Ever After strips the fairy godmother out of Cinderella and swaps her for Leonardo da Vinci, a sharp tongue, and a heroine who reads Utopia and throws punches when required. It's a lush, sun-dappled Renaissance romance that wants you to believe in both class mobility and true love, anchored by Drew Barrymore's steel-spined Danielle. Comfort viewing for anyone who wants their fairy tale grounded, funny, and unmistakably feminist.
If you liked this
The Princess Bride1987
The gold standard for fairy tale romance played with a wink — swordfights, true love, and narration that keeps undercutting the schmaltz before it curdles. If you liked Ever After's self-aware charm, this is the funnier, faster cousin.
But The fantasy elements (giants, sword duels, rhyming villains) are played straight where Ever After stays grounded, so it's a bigger tonal leap than it looks.

Shakespeare in Love1998
Same year, same appetite for costume, wit, and a heroine smarter than the men around her, but here the romance is doomed from the start and all the sweeter for it.
But Ends on heartbreak rather than a wedding, so it's a poor match if what you wanted from Ever After was the happy ending, guaranteed.

10 Things I Hate About You1999
Take Danielle's sharp tongue and stubborn independence, drop her into a Seattle high school, and you get this — a heroine who won't be tamed and a script that still crackles twenty-five years on.
But Teen comedy energy and a contemporary setting are a long way from Renaissance France, so the register shift might be jarring.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Pan's Labyrinth2006
Both put a resourceful girl at the mercy of a cruel guardian and use fairy tale logic to process real powerlessness — but where Ever After lets its heroine win through wit, Pan's Labyrinth asks what happens when the world refuses to let her.
Guillermo del Toro's masterpiece uses fairy tale imagery to tell a story about fascist Spain and a girl's fierce inner life — visually stunning, emotionally shattering, unforgettable.
But Genuinely dark and violent in ways Ever After never approaches; this is not comfort viewing, and the ending will not console you.

A Knight's Tale2001
A peasant reinvents himself as a nobleman to win a tournament and a lady's heart — the class-climbing romance of Ever After, but rowdier, funnier, and scored to Queen.
But Deliberately anachronistic and much broader in its comedy; if you loved Ever After's relative restraint, this may feel like too much.

Pride & Prejudice2005
Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Bennet has the same mix of pride, wit, and refusal to marry for anything less than love that makes Danielle so satisfying to watch.
But No fairy tale trappings at all — this is straight period drama, so anyone wanting magic or wish-fulfillment plotting will be disappointed.

Cinderella2015
The straightest version of the story you'll find, gorgeously mounted by Disney, for whenever you want the fairy godmother and the glass slipper played completely sincerely.
But It lacks Ever After's wit and revisionism entirely — this is comfort food, not commentary, and some will find it thin by comparison.

Enchanted2007
A cartoon princess falls into modern-day New York and the film has enormous fun colliding fairy tale logic with reality — the meta cousin to Ever After's grounded revisionism.
But Broad, musical, and aimed squarely at families; the comedy is much sillier than anything in Ever After.

Emma.2020
Another headstrong heroine navigating class and courtship with sharp comic timing, dressed in equally sumptuous costuming and just as concerned with who deserves whom.
But Austen's satire is colder and more socially precise than Ever After's warmth; it rewards patience rather than swooning.

The Duchess2008no page yet
For when you want the other side of the costume-drama coin: a real woman trapped by the same aristocratic marriage market Ever After lets its heroine escape.
But Bleak and often devastating where Ever After is hopeful — this is a hard watch, not an easy one.
Maid in Manhattan2002no page yet
Same bones as Ever After — a working woman mistaken for someone above her station, a powerful man who falls for her before he learns the truth — just transplanted to a Manhattan hotel and stripped of any historical seriousness.
Jennifer Lopez as a hotel maid mistaken for a socialite, wooed by a senator's son — pure modern Cinderella comfort food if what you actually wanted from Ever After was the fantasy, not the history lesson.
But Thin plotting and much lower ambitions; it has none of Ever After's wit, intelligence, or interest in period detail.
