Spirited Away

Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece drops a sulky ten-year-old into a bathhouse for gods, ghosts, and grotesques, and never bothers explaining the rules — you just keep up, the way she does. It's gorgeously animated, genuinely eerie in places, funny in others, and builds toward something closer to a rite of passage than a rescue mission. For all ages, but not for the impatient.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you are drawn to strange, crowded otherworlds rendered with patient, tactile detail, where wonder and everyday unease share the same frame.

Skip it if you need brisk plotting and a clear grip on who's who, since this drifts through strange encounters and odd rules without rushing to explain them.

What it asks of you: Just over two hours, paced at a dreamy saunter, with long stretches of quiet looking rather than plot, and a steady tolerance for the unexplained.

Miyazaki's other masterpiece, and the one for people who wanted more teeth in the fantasy — gods with grudges, forests that fight back, and a hero caught between them. Same hand-drawn wonder, much higher stakes.

But Violent and morally knotty — not the gentle bridge into the world of spirits you might be expecting.

Howl's Moving Castle2004

Another Miyazaki spell — a cursed old woman, a vain wizard, and a house on legs — with the same warmth, the same eye for flight and clockwork, and an anti-war heart underneath the whimsy.

But The plot loosens badly in the back half; gorgeous to look at, less satisfying to follow through.

My Neighbor Totoro1988

The gentlest possible Miyazaki, and a good sense of where his obsession with thresholds between worlds started — two sisters, a new house, and a forest spirit who just wants to help.

But Barely any plot and almost no tension — if you wanted the eerie bathhouse dread, this won't give it.

Labyrinth1986

Same engine: a girl navigates a rule-bound fantasy underworld, outwitting a bizarre bureaucracy of monsters to save family one trial at a time — just swapped from delicate animation to '80s puppet spectacle.

Jennifer Connelly's teenager talks her way through a Jim Henson goblin kingdom to rescue her baby brother, bargaining with monsters and breaking rules exactly the way Chihiro does — just with puppets, glitter, and David Bowie in impossibly tight trousers.

But Camp, dated in places, and a musical — the tone is deliberately silly where Miyazaki's is dreamlike.

Kiki's Delivery Service1989

A witch leaves home to find her feet in a new city, and the film treats her ordinary crisis of confidence with the same tenderness Spirited Away gives Chihiro. Cosy, sincere, quietly moving.

But Low stakes throughout — this is a coming-of-age hang, not an adventure with monsters and vanishing parents.

Wolf Children2012

Mamoru Hosoda's answer to Ghibli: a single mother raising two half-wolf kids, told with the same tactile hand-drawn beauty and the same trust that children's fears deserve serious treatment.

But It spans years rather than days and leans harder into melancholy — a slower, sadder kind of magic.

Coraline2009

Stop-motion instead of drawn animation, but the same premise underneath: a girl slips into an alternate world run by a terrifying maternal figure, where kindness has a price and nothing is what it looks.

But Genuinely frightening for younger viewers — button eyes and all — and colder in tone than anything Miyazaki made.

Paprika2006

Satoshi Kon's fever-dream about dreams bleeding into reality shares Spirited Away's delight in transformation and its total disregard for explaining its own weirdness. Denser, stranger, unforgettable.

But Adult and genuinely disorienting in places — this is not a film for children, or the faint of heart.

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya2013

Ghibli's other great director, Isao Takahata, tells a Japanese folk tale with watercolour-loose animation that feels handmade in a completely different way — a fitting companion piece about growing up and letting go.

But Slow and mournful, and visually so different from Miyazaki's style that it might not scratch the same itch.

Arrietty2010

A tiny borrower girl navigates a house-sized world with real peril in every teacup — Ghibli's small-scale answer to Spirited Away's big spirit realm, tender and beautifully detailed.

But Slighter and more modest in scope — a lovely hour and a half, not an epic.

Pan's Labyrinth2006

Both send a girl through a threshold into a spirit-haunted otherworld she must survive using cleverness and courage, where the fantastical is really about processing an unbearable family situation.

Guillermo del Toro's fairy tale sends a young girl into an underworld of monstrous guardians and impossible tasks, running parallel to a very real horror happening at home. Same shape as Chihiro's ordeal, pushed into much darker territory.

But Genuinely disturbing and violent, set against fascist Spain — a fantasy for adults, not family viewing.

Alice1988

Same core image — a girl crossing into an underworld where eating and being eaten, transformation and appetite, are the real danger — but rendered in unsettling handmade stop-motion instead of Miyazaki's warmth.

This Czech stop-motion nightmare sends its Alice down a literal drawer into a world where food talks back and every object might eat you — the unsettling, tactile ancestor of Spirited Away's gluttonous bathhouse of transformation.

But Deliberately grotesque and slow, with dialogue reduced to narration — a cult art film, not an easy watch.
