Natsume's Book of Friends
A gentle, episodic anime about a lonely boy who inherits a book binding hundreds of spirits to his late grandmother's will, and spends his days quietly releasing them. Low on stakes, high on ache — each episode is a small, self-contained story about loneliness, memory and the slow work of letting people (and monsters) in. Best watched slowly, one or two episodes at a time.

Watch it if you love episodic slice-of-life stories where a gentle, lonely boy quietly earns the trust of strange spirits, and where the warmth comes from small kindnesses rather than big plot machinery.
Skip it if you want a series that builds toward a single escalating arc, since each story tends to resolve within its own episode and the pace stays unhurried and soft-spoken throughout.
What it asks of you: Settle in for short, self-contained chapters of about twenty-six minutes, with a calm rhythm, a melancholy undertow, and a patience for slowly learning who these characters are.

The same unhurried, episodic rhythm — a wandering specialist encounters strange spirit-adjacent phenomena and quietly resolves human sorrow underneath it. Gorgeous, meditative, and the closest thing anime has to poetry.
But Even slower and colder than Natsume; almost no recurring cast or warmth, so it can feel remote.
Barakamon2014
Swap spirits for a rural island community, and you get the same emotional engine: an isolated young man slowly thawed by people who refuse to leave him alone. Very funny, very tender.
But No supernatural element at all — if the yokai were the draw for you, this will feel like a different show entirely.
Kamisama Kiss2012
A human thrown into managing a shrine full of spirits and shikigami, with the same blend of comedy, folklore and slow-building tenderness. Lighter and more romantic than Natsume, but kin in spirit.
But Leans harder into romance and shounen-ish rivalry than Natsume's melancholy — different pacing, different priorities.

Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories2016
Both are anthology shows built around a quiet, mysterious protagonist who helps strangers let go of old sorrow one episode at a time — Natsume just does it with monsters instead of miso soup.
A live-action anthology where a silent chef runs a late-night diner and each episode quietly resolves a stranger's private grief over a bowl of food. No spirits, but the exact same structural heartbeat as Natsume — small kindnesses, episodic strangers, one gentle constant at the center.
But Zero fantasy elements; if the yokai and folklore are what you love, this will feel like the wrong genre entirely.

Barely any plot, all atmosphere — a young witch settles into rural life and the show just breathes. If you love Natsume's quiet countryside scenes more than its ghost mechanics, start here.

Another book/contract premise — a shopkeeper grants wishes to those who wander in, at a price, and spirits and regret tangle through every episode. CLAMP's visual style is sharper and stranger than Natsume's.
But Colder and more ominous, with a trickster protagonist instead of Natsume's soft-hearted one.
Spirited Away2001
The essential gateway to Japanese spirit-world storytelling — a girl navigates a bathhouse of gods and monsters and comes out the other side changed. If you've somehow missed it, fix that immediately.
But You've probably already seen this. It's the most obvious recommendation in the world, and rightly so.
My Neighbor Totoro1988
No conflict, no villain, just two sisters and a forest spirit — the purest distillation of the gentle-supernatural-slice-of-life mood Natsume trades in, minus any sadness.
But Almost plotless by design; if you need narrative momentum, this offers none.
Mononoke2007
Same word, wildly different tone — a masked exorcist unravels the human grudges behind hauntings in episodes that look like moving ukiyo-e prints. For when you want the folklore with real teeth.
But Genuinely unsettling and visually dense; it trades Natsume's warmth for dread almost entirely.
Yo-Kai Watch2014
A kid-friendly, comedic take on the same idea — ordinary boy befriends and negotiates with troublesome spirits. Good if you want the concept with all the melancholy sanded off.
But Aimed squarely at children; the emotional depth Natsume built its reputation on is mostly absent here.
Departures2008
Natsume spends his life tending gently to beings the world has forgotten or feared; Departures is about a man who finds the same quiet purpose tending to the human dead — the register shifts from wistful fantasy to real, unadorned grief.
A failed cellist becomes an undertaker performing traditional Japanese ritual mortuary rites, and the film turns his awkward, unwanted profession into something achingly dignified. Won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for good reason.
But It's about death, directly and often — no supernatural cushioning, just grief handled with enormous tenderness. Not a light watch.
Kwaidan1965
Same well of Japanese ghost-and-spirit folklore that Natsume draws its yokai from, but sixty years earlier and staged as unsettling tragedy instead of gentle healing — proof the source material always had teeth.
Four classic Japanese ghost stories shot on soundstages painted like folding screens — one of the most visually beautiful horror films ever made, and the source pool Natsume's yokai ultimately swim in.
But Three hours long, deliberately theatrical, and genuinely eerie rather than comforting — this is Natsume's folklore with the warmth stripped out.
