Sonny Boy
Sonny Boy is a surreal, visually inventive anime about a school and its students trapped in a drifting alternate dimension where they develop mysterious powers. It's dreamlike and philosophical rather than plot-driven, blending magical-girl aesthetics with existential science fiction. Best for viewers comfortable with ambiguity, gorgeous animation, and stories that prioritize mood and metaphor over answers.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like shows that let a mystery of strange rules and quiet friendships unfold at a loose, dreamy pace, where the emotional beats land harder than the spectacle, somewhat in the spirit of Madoka Magica's unsettling wonder.
Skip it if you want a tight plot that resolves neatly each week, because this one leans on atmosphere, lingering silences and a slow build that can feel frustratingly vague for long stretches.
What it asks of you: It runs twelve half-hour episodes, so it is a short commitment, but it asks you to sit with ambiguity and let the odd, dreamlike tone carry you without many answers early on.

Natsume's Book of Friends2008
Gentle supernatural mystery with a similar sense of the strange coexisting quietly alongside the ordinary. Beautiful character work and quiet moments of profound tenderness woven through the fantasy.
But Episodic and slow-paced; it rewards patience but won't grab you with plot momentum. The emotional payoff takes time to build.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020
Anime that subverts its own genre with intelligence and visual flair. Like Sonny Boy, it uses magical-girl trappings to explore darker philosophical territory with stunning direction.
But Only 12 episodes means it moves fast and leaves threads deliberately loose. The tonal shifts catch some viewers off-guard.

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei2010
Rapid-fire, visually dazzling anime about students adrift in possibility space. Same mixture of whimsy and melancholy, identity and transformation, wrapped in gorgeous experimental animation.
But The pace and density demand active attention; it can feel exhausting rather than relaxing. Subtitles move quickly.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
The NeverEnding Story1984
Both are about characters in enclosed worlds that are actually external manifestations of internal states. Both ask: what does it mean to disappear into a place that isn't real?
A boy enters a magical world that mirrors his inner landscape, where the rules are dream-logic and the stakes are existential. Like Sonny Boy, it's ultimately about imagination, presence, and the self.
But A 1980s German fantasy film with practical effects and earnest tone. If you're drawn to Sonny Boy's cool, contemporary visual language, this will feel quaint.

Ergo Proxy2006
Post-apocalyptic noir with similar philosophical bent and visual ambition. Moody, introspective, unafraid to leave interpretation to the viewer. Outstanding use of silence and pacing.
But Very slow and deliberately obscure. If you need clarity and forward momentum, this will frustrate you.

Haibane Renmei2002
Mysterious, melancholic anime about a group in an enclosed world trying to understand what they are and where they are. Quiet, beautiful, rewarding repeated viewing.
But Deliberately obtuse about its own mythology. The finale answers almost nothing directly, which feels either profound or infuriating depending on your tolerance.

Kill la Kill2013
Wild visual energy and an ensemble of students fighting against a surreal system. Shares Sonny Boy's commitment to animation as storytelling and its refusal to play by genre rules.
But Aggressively loud and chaotic where Sonny Boy is dreamy; the tone is completely different. Much more shonen than Sonny Boy's ambiguous space.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho A Story that leads to the Antarctica2018
Four girls on an impossible journey with magical logic and character warmth. Adventure and philosophy balanced with genuine heart, strong emotional core beneath the unusual premise.
But More conventionally heartwarming than Sonny Boy. If you're specifically drawn to alienation and weirdness, this commits harder to hope.

Daria1997
Ensemble of teenagers navigating a strange, often absurd world. Deadpan and observant with surprising depth; a school story that's really about how to think.
But American MTV animation from the 90s—completely different visual language and comedic register. Much more grounded despite the surrealism.

Carole & Tuesday2019
Two girls appear on Mars with no memory. Musical, optimistic, visually adventurous with an ensemble cast learning who they are. Shares the sense of characters waking into strangeness.
But More resolved and plot-driven than Sonny Boy. The show has answers where Sonny Boy has questions, which changes the entire experience.

Babylon 51993
Like Sonny Boy, it uses sci-fi premise to explore what happens when disparate people are trapped together and forced to discover who they are. Both have that sense of reality being unstable.
An ensemble science-fiction series about a diverse group forced to coexist in an isolated space station, navigating philosophy and politics alongside action. Metatextual about storytelling itself by the final season.
But 90s TV production values and pacing; very different from anime. Serialized across five seasons, so commitment is massive. Early episodes are rocky.

Mulholland Drive2001
Both use surreal spaces and ensemble casts to explore identity and what's real. Both suggest that the world is a manifestation of the characters' inner states. Both refuse closure in favor of mystery.
A woman and a girl navigate Los Angeles as reality fractures around them. Gorgeous, mysterious, operates on dream logic. About identity, performance, and the unreliable nature of perception itself.
But Nearly three hours of David Lynch abstraction. By design it resists interpretation and clarity. If you need a film to make sense, this will infuriate you.
