Space opera

A space station on the frontier of an uneasy peace becomes the stage for a five-year war, betrayal and prophecy epic, plotted almost entirely in advance. It's clunky in places — the effects have aged, some acting is stagey — but the sheer ambition of its serialized storytelling, decades before that was normal on TV, still lands. For patient sci-fi lovers who want a novel, not an episode.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a story that rewards patience, where political maneuvering between species matters as much as the starship battles, and you enjoy characters who change slowly across a long arc.

Skip it if you need tight standalone episodes or slick modern effects, since the early seasons look their age and threads take many hours to land.

What it asks of you: A long haul: five seasons and about 110 episodes of an hour each, with dialogue-heavy scenes and a slow build that rewards staying put rather than skipping ahead.

Both shows are built on the same rare engine: a war planned years in advance, told through statesmen and soldiers whose personal choices ripple into galactic consequence. LOGH strips away B5's alien prosthetics and station-bar intrigue and replaces them with debate chambers and command bridges, doubling down on the political philosophy B5 only gestured at — same appetite for grand strategy and moral argument, wildly different costume.

A vast animated space opera following two rival commanders across a galactic civil war, treating democracy, autocracy and the ethics of leadership with the seriousness of a history book, not a cartoon.
