Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020

A masterpiece that deconstructs the magical girl genre with philosophical depth and visual inventiveness. Madoka proves the form can be profound without sacrificing magical spectacle or emotional devastation.

But It gets dark—genuinely disturbing in places. If you want pure escapism and whimsy, this inverts those expectations entirely.

Natsume's Book of Friends2008

Supernatural storytelling with a tender heart. Gentle, atmospheric episodes about yokai and friendship that build into something unexpectedly moving. It shares Crystal's respect for character over constant action.

But The pacing is deliberately slow and contemplative. If you need high stakes or plot momentum, the episodic structure can feel meandering.

Kill la Kill2013

Pure, confident anime filmmaking. Kinetic action, genuine character growth, and visual audacity in every frame. It celebrates transformation sequences and girl-power action with zero irony and total commitment.

But It's aggressively weird and the fanservice never apologizes. The aesthetic isn't everyone's cup of tea, and the plot gets delightfully unhinged.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Michiko e Hatchin2008

Both use supernatural frameworks to tell stories about girls finding their agency and power. Crystal's transformation is literal; Michiko & Hatchin's is spiritual—but the stakes and emotional truth are equivalent.

A series about a girl escaping an abusive home with an escaped convict that is somehow warm, funny, and redemptive. Uses magical realism and visual poetry where another show would use sentimentality. Animation that feels alive in every frame.

But It's about real trauma and dysfunction, not fantasy adventure. The tonal shifts are jarring and some episodes are genuinely uncomfortable. Long and demanding.

Revolutionary Girl Utena1997

The template for what anime can be when it embraces surrealism and metaphor. A girl-centered story about agency, identity, and revolution told through sword duels and stunning visual repetition. Deeply influential on modern magical girl works.

But It's deliberately repetitive and abstract. If you need straightforward plotting, Utena will frustrate you. The early episodes also drag before the show finds its genius.

Cardcaptor Sakura1998

The other perfect magical girl template: character-driven, gorgeously paced, and genuinely funny. Sakura's cheerfulness feels earned rather than saccharine, and the found family dynamic is unmatched.

But It's episodic monster-of-the-week storytelling stretched across 70 episodes. The overarching plot moves glacially if you're impatient.

Attack on Titan2013

Epic, operatic anime that commits entirely to its premise. Stunning direction, genuine mystery, and character deaths that actually matter. Shows what modern anime production can achieve when the vision is clear.

But Becomes increasingly convoluted in later seasons. Some viewers find it exhausting rather than compelling by the end.

Demon Slayer2019

Modern anime at peak technical achievement. Animation that transcends the medium, a protagonist who earns your love, and action sequences that justify watching on the biggest screen possible.

But Plot is fairly straightforward shonen fare. If you need thematic complexity or surprise, it delivers exactly what you expect, beautifully.

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho A Story that leads to the Antarctica2018

Four girls decide to go to Antarctica and the show is about their friendship, ambition, and becoming themselves. Earnest, joyful, and surprisingly moving without ever becoming maudlin.

But The premise sounds slight and the tone is relentlessly upbeat. It has no cynicism whatsoever, which isn't for everyone.

Carole & Tuesday2019

Both center on found families of girls discovering their strength through connection and creativity rather than individual heroism. Crystal's Guardians are warriors; Carole and Tuesday are artists—but the bond is the source of power in both.

Two girls meet on Mars and become musicians. Gorgeous, melancholic, sci-fi magical girl energy without the magic. About art, connection, and refusing to be erased. The animation is stunning and the soundtrack will live in your head.

But It's paced like a music video sometimes. Plot can feel secondary to mood and aesthetics. The ending divides viewers sharply.
