Love Stage!!

A charming yaoi comedy about Izumi, a manga-obsessed college student from a celebrity family who meets Ryoma, a handsome actor who fell for him (in a dress) on a commercial set—and whose feelings don't shift when he learns the truth. Warm, funny, and genuinely sweet without pretension.

Junjou Romantica2008

The foundational yaoi anime: three intertwined love stories with the same blend of comedy, genuine affection, and character chemistry that makes Love Stage!! work. Older but the DNA is identical.

But The pacing is glacial by modern standards, and it leans harder into slapstick than character development. Also just… there's a lot of it.

Dou kyu sei – Classmates2016

A film-length yaoi romance that's visually gorgeous and narratively tight. Two high school boys, genuine connection, no filler. The animation is a step up and the emotional clarity is bracing.

But It's only 90 minutes so it moves fast, and the high school setting might feel younger than you want. Also subtitled, if that matters to you.

No. 62011

A yaoi series that's also a thoughtful dystopian sci-fi story. The romance is real and the world-building is ambitious. It trusts that you care about both the plot and the relationship.

But Only 11 episodes for a lot of story, so it feels rushed. The ending divides people. Tonal whiplash between comedy and some genuinely dark moments.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Sasaki and Miyano2022

Both center on a romance blooming from mistaken assumptions about the other person's gender or presentation, but Sasaki and Miyano plays that discovery as a genuine emotional reckoning rather than a punchline.

A yaoi that feels like it grew up. The romance is genuine and patient; the characterization is sharp. More interested in who these people are than in cute moments. The later seasons especially have real stakes.

But Slower burn than Love Stage!! and less focused on laugh-out-loud comedy. Some find it too earnest. Also still carries yaoi tropes even when subverting them.

Natsume's Book of Friends2008

Supernatural slice-of-life with warmth and melancholy. Not explicitly romantic but deeply intimate. If you loved Love Stage!!'s gentleness and character focus, this offers similar comfort in a different register.

But Episodic and contemplative—nothing like the romantic plot momentum of Love Stage!!. Some find it too quiet. Doesn't have a traditional climax.

Free Birds2013

Sports anime with genuine chemistry between male leads and a devoted fanbase. Beautiful animation, real character arcs, and that same easy affection between friends that makes Love Stage!! work. Plus actual swimming is cool.

But The romantic subtext is genuinely sub; it's not explicit. If you need clear romance, this will frustrate you. Also: a lot of fanservice around shirtless swimmers.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War?2019

A romantic comedy that's genuinely clever about its dynamics. Two smart people playing games with real feelings underneath. Sharp writing and actual comedy that lands, with genuine moments of tenderness.

But Straight couples, so not the same energy. Also relies heavily on repeated jokes and running gags that can feel thin after a while.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun2014

A romantic comedy about manga creation with a similar energy: characters you like, gentle humor, and a real sweet core. The meta elements are clever without being smug.

But Straight romance with a female lead, so tonally different. Also more interested in comedy setups than in emotional payoff.

A Gentleman's Dignity2012

Both use comedy to soften romance while respecting that real feelings are underneath—but this one extends that warmth across friendship, family, and the whole mess of adult life rather than just the central couple.

A Korean romantic comedy about four men in their 30s navigating love and friendship. Witty, warm, and surprisingly mature. The romance is real and the ensemble feels lived-in. Criminally underseen.

But Straight couples. Longer episodes (one-hour format) so commitment. The humor is sometimes gender-essentialist in ways that haven't aged perfectly.

Carole & Tuesday2019

Both locate romance in the space between people making something together—both center artists discovering connection through creative collaboration, not just attraction.

A science-fiction romance about two young women making music on Mars. Visually stunning, emotionally genuine, and structured around creative partnership rather than typical romance beats. The music matters. It's rare and genuinely moving.

But Not yaoi, and romance is secondary to the music and world-building. Some find the ending unsatisfying. Also pretty weird in places. If you need clear romantic payoff, this might not deliver it.
