Kaguya-sama's joke is that Kaguya and Shirogane treat love like a strategy game they must win; The Queen's Gambit takes that same brain — obsessive, competitive, always three steps ahead — and plays it completely straight.

A prodigy who thinks eleven moves ahead of everyone in the room, including in matters of the heart. The pleasure of watching a genius calculate is identical, minus the jokes.

But It's a live-action drama with real stakes and addiction storylines — no gag structure, no narrator, no comic relief cast.

In the Mood for Love2000

Strip away every joke and Kaguya-sama's premise is this: pride keeping two people from confessing what's obvious to everyone else. This is that exact ache, played entirely for real.

Two neighbours fall for each other and, bound by pride and propriety, never say so. Wong Kar-wai films the unspoken with such aching restraint it hurts to watch.

But No comedy, almost no dialogue about feelings at all, and a slow, hypnotic pace built for patience, not laughs.
