Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!
- Comedy
- Light-hearted
A high school romantic comedy about a boy trying to escape his embarrassing teenage delusions of grandeur who gets roped into the secret world of a girl still living in hers. It's silly, sweet, and genuinely touching—a show about growing up that treats fantasy play and real feelings with equal weight. For anyone who's ever been a bit much as a teenager.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you find cringe comedy funnier when it is affectionate, and you enjoy a romance that grows out of two awkward people teasing each other rather than from grand gestures.
Skip it if the comedy leans hard on secondhand embarrassment, so if watching someone flail makes you wince rather than laugh, the first episodes will feel like a long ordeal.
What it asks of you: Twenty-five-minute episodes stacked up over two seasons, quick and jokey, with a romance that moves at a patient, sideways pace rather than rushing toward a grand payoff.

Toradora!2008
A similarly charming romance that builds from comedy to genuine emotion. Two mismatched teenagers navigate feelings and friendship with the same warmth and humor, and the character work is quietly excellent.
But It leans harder into melodrama in the second half, and some plot developments feel rushed compared to the steadier pacing of *Chuunibyou*.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War?2019
The same energy of two people pretending they're fine while clearly not being fine. Brilliant comedy built on character psychology, with a relationship that develops naturally across seasons.
But It's much more cerebrally plotted—less whimsy, more scheming. If you want the fantasy-play element, you won't find it here.

Horimiya2021
Another story about teenagers revealing their true selves to each other. It has that same mix of comedy and genuine sweetness, with a larger cast of oddball friends who all matter.
But The anime adaptation is only 13 episodes and adapts a lot of manga very quickly. It feels a bit rushed at times.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei2010
Both are about the gap between the fantasies we cling to and the person we could become. *Tatami Galaxy* is *Chuunibyou* if it were urgent and painful instead of warm—the same skeleton, completely different register.
A fearlessly weird anime about a college student looking back on wasted time and wrong turns. Visually inventive, philosophically playful, and genuinely moving about the cost of not growing up. Every episode rewrites itself.
But It's avant-garde in how it looks and sounds. The rapid-fire dialogue is hard to follow even with subtitles, and it's aggressively *not* a comfort watch.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo2012
Released the same year, it shares *Chuunibyou*'s warmth and focus on a found family of misfits. Less about delusion but equally about people figuring out who they are.
But It gets heavier and more serious in the back half in ways that some find tonally jarring. The romance subplot is less central than you might expect.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai2011
Another comedy about socially awkward teenagers finding their people. Good character chemistry and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments mixed with genuine friendship.
But The humor is broader and slightly cruder. It's less interested in emotional payoff than *Chuunibyou* is.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru.2013
A comedy-drama about high schoolers stumbling through relationships and self-discovery. Smarter and more introspective than it first appears.
But It's much denser and more dialogue-heavy. The tone is deliberately awkward in a way that doesn't lighten up as much as *Chuunibyou*'s does.

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei2014
A gentle, funny romance about two people thrown together who have to actually get to know each other. Great supporting cast and a genuinely cozy vibe.
But It's very low-key and slice-of-life. If you want plot momentum, this isn't it.

A Certain Scientific Railgun2009
A spinoff that works as its own thing: action-comedy about a girl with superpowers navigating school and friendship. Strong character focus and better animation than many contemporaries.
But It's much more action-oriented. The fantasy-play and romance elements are minimal, so the emotional texture is quite different.

A Silent Voice: The Movie2016
Both are about the theatrical self we hide behind—delusion as armor—and the hard work of being actually known by someone. But *Voice* treats that as tragedy first and finds comedy only after.
A feature film about a boy and girl learning to see each other clearly, with past shame and vulnerability at its core. Gorgeous animation and a willingness to sit with pain before finding lightness.
But It's a serious film about bullying and deafness. The first third is genuinely uncomfortable. It's not a comedy, and the earnestness will not be lightened by jokes.
