A Certain Scientific Railgun
A magical-girl anime with science instead of sparkles. Mikoto Misaka and her friends use electromagnetic powers to keep peace in a sprawling academy city where esper abilities are scientifically cultivated. It's clever, kinetic, funny, and genuinely invested in its characters' relationships and growth. For anyone who wants their power fantasy grounded and their friendships real.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy episodic superpower capers set in a sprawling academy city, where bright banter between two friends matters as much as the electrical showdowns.
Skip it if you need one tightly plotted story, since this runs as a long string of loosely linked cases with a mostly light tone.
What it asks of you: Seventy-three half-hour episodes across three seasons, so it asks for a long commitment, though each episode is easy to pick up and put down.

My Hero Academia2016
Another superhero origin story, but one that actually cares about training, failure, and why ordinary people would want these powers. The action sequences are stunning and the ensemble cast grows on you.
But Runs long and sometimes retreads the same emotional beats. The later seasons lose some of the early charm.

Mob Psycho 1002016
Telekinetic middle schooler trying to live a normal life while his powers keep dragging him into strange situations. Genuinely funny, visually inventive, and has real heart beneath the absurdity.
But Tonal shifts between comedy and darkness can feel jarring if you're not in the mood for them.

Hataraku Maou-sama!2013
Fantasy characters stranded in the modern world have to navigate convenience stores and fast food. It's hilarious, warm-hearted, and finds endless comedy in the collision between the supernatural and the mundane.
But If you want serious stakes, this isn't it. The plot is secondary to the character interactions and slice-of-life gags.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Sora yori mo Tooi Basho A Story that leads to the Antarctica2018
Female-centered ensemble that proves the strength is in the friendships, not the abilities.
Four girls on a mission that seems impossible, learning each other through adversity. Same energy as Railgun's friend group dynamics but grounded in real life. Funny, touching, and genuinely inspiring without being saccharine.
But No supernatural powers at all. If you came for the action, this is pure character work and emotional beats.

Kill la Kill2013
Schoolgirl fights her way up a rigid hierarchy with sentient clothing as a weapon. Visually spectacular, deliberately over-the-top, and surprisingly thoughtful about power structures and self-acceptance.
But The fanservice is deliberate and constant. If that bothers you, no amount of narrative cleverness will fix it.

Blue Exorcist2011
Teenage boy discovers he's the son of Satan and enrolls in a demon-fighting school. Great action, solid mystery box, and a found-family dynamic that actually lands emotionally.
But Splits from the manga partway through. The original ending is less satisfying than the source material continues to be.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020
Looks like a cheerful magical girl show for the first two episodes, then systematically deconstructs the genre with genuine philosophical weight. Stunning visuals and a score that will haunt you.
But The shift in tone is jarring by design. Some find it manipulative; others find it brilliant. Not a comfortable watch.

Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign2015
Vampire apocalypse anime with beautiful character animation and genuine stakes. Supernatural mystery with real friendships at its core, and a world that keeps revealing new layers.
But Jumps between plot threads and sometimes feels like it's setting up more than it pays off. Second season loses momentum.

The Irregular at Magic High School2014
Magic system treated as rigorous science, explored through a school for gifted students. Dense worldbuilding, interesting power mechanics, and a main character who actually thinks rather than just reacts.
But Overly technical explanations can feel like homework. The protagonist's near-perfection makes tension harder to sustain.

A Certain Magical Index2008
Sharing a universe with Railgun but from the opposite angle—magic instead of science. If you want more of the Academy City world and mythology, this deepens it substantially.
But Protagonist is intentionally less likeable. Wider scope sometimes dilutes focus. Best watched alongside Railgun rather than as a standalone.

Jormungand2012
Female lead with genuine agency, partnership as the core dynamic, and a world that runs on rules the characters must master.
Arms dealer protagonist and her bodyguard navigate a dangerous world with intelligence and teamwork. Cynical where Railgun is hopeful, but both center on a powerful girl and her partner working in concert. Stylish and morally complex.
But Darker in every way. Violence has weight. If you want to stay in lighter territory, this will feel like a tonal whiplash.
