IS: Infinite Stratos

IS: Infinite Stratos is a light-hearted anime harem comedy with genuine action sequences. A teenage boy discovers he can pilot advanced exoskeletons called Infinite Stratos—supposedly only operable by women—and is enrolled in an all-girls academy where he's the only male student. It's wish-fulfilment fantasy played mostly for laughs, with colorful characters and energetic fight scenes that don't take themselves seriously.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a harem-comedy setup with mecha-suit action played for laughs, where the premise is an excuse for escalating silly misunderstandings and a cast of sharp, overconfident characters.

Skip it if you find the gender-locked premise grating or want serious sci-fi weight, since the stakes stay light and the fan-service-leaning jokes can feel repetitive across its 24 episodes.

What it asks of you: Roughly twenty-five minute episodes, two seasons, asking little beyond a willingness to let the gags pile up and the story stay easygoing rather than tightly plotted.

If you liked this

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch2006

Sharp writing and compelling character dynamics wrapped around high-stakes mecha action. The protagonist's journey from underdog to something far more dangerous will keep you riveted through both seasons.

But The second season dips in quality and the plot occasionally spirals into territory that tests patience. It's also genuinely dark where IS is playful.

Mobile Suit Gundam 002007

Stunning mecha designs, intelligent political worldbuilding, and action sequences that justify every frame of animation. The idealism-versus-pragmatism debates feel earned rather than preachy.

But Starts slow with character introductions. The first arc feels more like setup than payoff, so you need patience before the series hooks you properly.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru.2013

The same appeal: a male lead navigating an all-female social ecosystem, but with genuine emotional intelligence beneath the comedy. Character development that actually matters, and relationships that feel real.

But Far less action—it's dialogue-heavy and introspective. If you want IS for the fights, this will feel slow. Also becomes deliberately melancholic in later seasons.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Kill la Kill2013

Both use the absurdity of 'special clothing/tech only these people can use' as a launching point for comedy and action, but Kill la Kill subverts the formula while IS plays it straight.

The spiritual inverse of IS: a girl protagonist in a hypermasculine school hierarchy, fighting with ridiculous superpowered uniforms. Shares IS's energy and absurdist humor, but with genuine satirical edge about power, identity, and agency.

But Deliberately provocative and sexually charged imagery that some find exploitative rather than clever. The animation style is intentionally crude in places. It's aggressively weird rather than comfortably fun.

Gakusen Toshi Asterisk2015

Nearly identical premise: male protagonist in an all-female academy, flashy superpowered combat, energetic romance subplot. If IS worked for you, this hits many of the same beats with solid production values.

But It's aesthetically very similar, which means if you bounce off the formula, you'll bounce off this too. Also less distinctive in tone.

Date a Live2013

Absurd high-concept comedy that commits fully to its premise. A boy must romantically seduce interdimensional spirits to save the world. The tonal whiplash between melodrama and slapstick is genuinely fun.

But The harem dynamics can feel exhausting if you're not there for that specifically. It's deliberately silly rather than clever, which limits its appeal.

Hundred2016

Another male student in an all-female combat academy, but with faster pacing and higher action density. If you want IS but more focused on the fights and less on the romance subplot, this delivers.

But Noticeably cheaper animation. The story is thinner and more predictable. It exists in IS's shadow rather than standing on its own.

Freezing2011

More mature take on the academy-with-superpowered-girls formula. The action is visceral and the character relationships have genuine weight and consequence.

But Darker and more violent than IS, with fan service that skews aggressive. The tonal shift might feel like a different show entirely.

A Certain Scientific Railgun2009

Both feature young people with exceptional abilities navigating school life, but Railgun prioritizes mystery and character over wish-fulfillment, and centers female competence rather than male fantasy.

Female protagonist in an academy with superpowers, but approached with humor, genuine mystery, and character writing that makes you care. The action is creative and the found-family dynamics are earned rather than manufactured.

But Slower than IS. It builds atmosphere and develops its world methodically, which means early episodes feel like setup. Also substantially less fan service if that was part of the appeal.
