In/Spectre

A stylish supernatural mystery series where a one-eyed girl and a spiritually cursed man investigate yokai cases in modern Japan. In/Spectre balances romance, logic puzzles, and genuine eeriness with gorgeous character animation and a witty, occasionally barbed dynamic between leads. It's for people who want their ghost stories clever and their banter sharp.

Jujutsu Kaisen2020

Darkly charismatic protagonist, elaborate supernatural combat system, and real character stakes. The action sequences are inventive and the plotting rewards attention. A phenomenon for good reason.

But Runs long and sometimes repeats exposition. The early episodes are slower than the hype suggests.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020

A brief, perfect series about girls with supernatural gifts at terrible cost. Genre-defining, visually inventive, and genuinely upsetting in the best way. Every episode matters.

But The art style looks deliberately cheap in places. If magical girl aesthetics annoy you, the first episode won't win you over.

The Garden of Sinners: Overlooking View2007

A woman who can see death investigates supernatural crimes. Gorgeous animation, genuinely unsettling mysteries, and a romance that develops sideways. Ufotable at their peak.

But It's a film series that assumes you'll watch in order. The first entry is slow and abstract. Requires patience before payoff.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Daria1997

Two outsiders with complementary personalities solving mysteries through clever dialogue rather than action. Same rhythm, completely different aesthetics.

A deadpan girl and her friend navigate social horrors with cutting wit. Structurally, it's the same engine as In/Spectre: two smart people with complementary energy solving small mysteries in a mundane setting where they don't quite fit. The humor lands differently but the bones are identical.

But It's a 1990s American comedy about high school social dynamics. If that premise sounds poisonous, nothing will save it. Animation is flat on purpose.

The Midnight Gospel2020

A spacecaster interviews people across dying worlds about death, meaning, and acceptance. Surreal, visually wild, surprisingly tender. Only eight episodes of half-hour runtime.

But Cosmically bleak even when it's funny. The animation sometimes overwhelms the dialogue. Not for people who need clear narrative resolution.

xxxHolic2006

A mysterious man grants wishes in exchange for equivalent payment in a shop that exists between worlds. Episodic, elegant, lightly gothic. The aesthetic is immaculate.

But Deliberately episodic and slow-paced. If you need plot momentum, you'll feel it dragging. The resolution is open-ended.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun2020

A ghost who lives in a school bathroom grants wishes. Visually inventive, darkly funny, with surprising emotional depth and gorgeous character dynamics. Uniquely weird.

But The art style is deliberately unconventional and may look cheap to some viewers. Tonal whiplash between comedy and genuine melancholy.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun poster

Monogatari Series2009

A boy who's half-vampire helps girls cursed by supernatural oddities. Dialogue-heavy, visually adventurous, funny and strange. A complete vision unlike anything else.

But It's a sprawling franchise spanning multiple seasons. The constant stylistic experimentation exhausts some viewers. Not beginner-friendly.

A Certain Scientific Railgun2009

A girl with electromagnetic powers investigates supernatural incidents in a massive academy city. Solid action, fun ensemble cast, good humor balancing mystery and combat.

But Lighter and less dark than its premise suggests. Some filler episodes dilute momentum. The best entries assume you've watched other Raildex properties.

The Midnight Club2022

Both build mystery through careful logic and dialogue rather than supernatural spectacle. Same structure of supernatural investigation, but one chooses darkness over wit.

In a hospice, ten terminally ill people tell ghost stories to each other. Mike Flanagan's most unusual work: mystery-driven horror that treats its premise with genuine respect. Gorgeous, eerie, and mechanically clever.

But It's fundamentally about dying people. The mood is funereal even when it's engaging. Requires emotional bandwidth.

Spice and Wolf2008

Supernatural being paired with ordinary human solving mysteries through conversation and lateral thinking. Same intimate dynamic, but set in economics rather than ghost cases.

A merchant and a wolf-goddess travel medieval trading routes solving economic mysteries. Gorgeously understated, dialogue-driven, with authentic romantic tension. The mysteries are real and the economics are clever. Anime's best argument for conversation over action.

But Nothing really happens. If you need plot momentum or visual spectacle, you'll find it slow. The economics can be dry.
