Television series
xxxHolic
A supernatural shop where wishes come true—for a price. xxxHolic is darkly comedic and gorgeously melancholic, built on the principle that every desire has a cost and most people won't like what they have to pay. It's contemplative despite its lighter moments, and rewards attention; the show trusts you to sit with mystery and ambiguity.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like slow-burning supernatural tales built from small odd encounters, where a wish-granting shop's strange rules and quiet melancholy matter more than any single plot twist.
Skip it if you want fast, continuous momentum, since many episodes unfold as self-contained stories with gentle comic detours that can feel leisurely before the larger thread takes hold.
What it asks of you: Expect short half-hour episodes that take their time, with a patient, episodic rhythm and a mix of unsettling imagery and lighter, sometimes silly, moments.

Mushi-Shi2005
Episodes are self-contained stories about spirits and curses in rural Japan, meditative and beautifully drawn. Like xxxHolic, it finds the sadness in supernatural wishes and what humans sacrifice for them.
But Episodes can feel slow if you want plot momentum. Some are deliberately quiet and won't resolve the way you expect.

Natsume's Book of Friends2008
A boy inherits a book that binds spirits to his name and must return them. Balances comedy with genuine melancholy, and shares xxxHolic's gift for making the supernatural feel both real and intimate.
But The episodic structure means some arcs matter more than others. Sentimentality can tip toward saccharine if you're not in the mood.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun2020
A ghost in a school bathroom grants wishes for payment, with gorgeous art and a similar dark-comedic tone. The supernatural marketplace and philosophical questions land much like xxxHolic's shop.
But It's brighter and more comedic than xxxHolic, which might feel tonal whiplash. Overexplained plotting sometimes undercuts the mystery.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Chainsaw Man2022
Both explore servitude and obligation as the foundation of a real relationship, and whether owing someone something can become a form of love.
A demon-hunting boy works off a debt by fighting creatures. It sounds completely different from xxxHolic, but both explore what it means to be bound to another person's will and whether there's dignity in serving. The relationship between Tanjiro and his demon driver mirrors Watanuki and Yuuko's transaction.
But It's visceral and bloody where xxxHolic is atmospheric. The tone is much harder and the pacing relentless—you won't get quiet moments to breathe.

Noragami2014
A minor god takes odd jobs in exchange for yen. Shares the quiet magic and bittersweet humor of xxxHolic, with real affection for its characters despite their strangeness.
But Later seasons lean heavier on romance and shonen action than the atmospheric mystery of the first. The pacing gets uneven.

The Owl House2020
A girl enters a demon realm where magic comes with genuine costs. Balances whimsy with real darkness and moral consequence. The show grows into something with xxxHolic's depth about payment and sacrifice.
But The first season is lighter than it becomes. If you want xxxHolic's tone immediately, it takes time to earn.

Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story2020
Girls are offered wishes by a cute creature; each comes with a hidden cost that spirals outward. Like xxxHolic, it's fundamentally about how desire and consequence are inseparable, and it breaks your heart doing it.
But It's much shorter (twelve episodes) and reaches its thesis faster. Some find the tonal shift from cute to dark too sudden.

Cardcaptor Sakura1998
Another CLAMP series, so you get the same artistic DNA. A girl captures magical cards; each card has rules and costs. It's lighter than xxxHolic but shares the sense that power and responsibility are paired.
But It's a 90s shoujo with some pacing that won't feel urgent. The tone is far gentler than xxxHolic—if you want darkness, this isn't it.

The NeverEnding Story1984
Both use the metaphor of a shop or book where wishes are granted to explore how growth requires losing something you can't get back.
A boy reads a magical book about a world that grants wishes but demands payment in memory and identity. It has xxxHolic's melancholy about desire and consequence, plus genuine unsettling beauty. A masterpiece about stories and sacrifice.
But It's a 1980s fantasy film, so the pacing is slow and some effects look dated. The sadness is heavier than you might expect from something marketed to kids.

Paprika2006
Both explore the boundary between what people want and what they actually need, and both suggest that reality itself has prices attached.
A therapist's dream-device blurs the line between wish and reality, desire and consequence. Like xxxHolic, it's visually gorgeous and philosophically dense, trusting you to sit with strangeness. The sense that reality has rules and costs runs through both.
But It's a 90-minute film that moves fast and assumes you'll pay close attention. The dreamscape logic can be exhausting if you want narrative clarity.
