Television series
Say "I Love You".
A quiet girl who has never trusted anyone meets the school's most popular boy, and he decides—unexpectedly, persistently—that he wants her. This 2012 anime plays first love as both miraculous and claustrophobic: watching someone thaw is touching, but watching them be consumed by someone else's certainty about them can feel suffocating. It's warm and genuine, occasionally uncomfortable, and utterly sincere about the terror of letting someone in.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like romances where the emotional work is slow and awkward, and where two shy people learn to say what they feel instead of being rescued by a big plot twist.
Skip it if you want a tidy, fast-moving romance; this one lingers on hesitation and misunderstanding, and some of its tension rests on characters who keep failing to just talk.
What it asks of you: Thirteen half-hour episodes that take their time, so you need patience with long pauses and small gestures before the story earns its payoff.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War?2019
Two geniuses play elaborate mind games to avoid confessing their feelings first. Where Say I Love You is sincere about vulnerability, this finds comedy in the exact opposite impulse—the brilliant desperation to stay in control. Both understand that romance is a high-stakes negotiation.
But The rapid-fire jokes require you to follow logic chains that span entire episodes. If you want earnestness without irony, this subverts it.

Your Name.2016
A film about two people separated by geography and circumstance who slowly realize they need each other. It has the same ache—the longing, the moment of recognition—but across a much wider canvas. Achingly beautiful animation, the kind of movie that makes you believe in fate.
But The first hour moves slowly if you're not captivated by mood and landscape. Some find it pretty but thin.

Horimiya2021
Two people from opposite social worlds discover each other's secret selves. It has the same warmth and the same belief that genuine connection is rarer and more valuable than popularity. Less intense than Say I Love You—more about joy than struggle.
But The show expands its focus to include a full ensemble cast. If you want Mei and Yamato's story to stay central, the distraction will annoy you.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Nana2005
Both understand that letting someone in is an act of total vulnerability that rewires who you are. The difference is that Say I Love You believes it works out, and Nana knows that sometimes it doesn't.
Two girls with the same name meet on a train and become each other's person—a bond that eclipses romance. It has Say I Love You's belief in the power of connection to transform you, but it's about how love can also destroy you. Raw, sexual, genuinely adult about consequences.
But The ending is ambiguous and sad. It doesn't resolve or comfort. If you watch Say I Love You for reassurance, Nana will leave you stranded.

Toradora!2008
A fierce girl and a gentle boy become allies in their separate pursuits, only to slowly realize what they actually want. It has the same architecture—two people who shouldn't fit learning to fit—and the same understanding that love means being seen.
But It leans harder into comedy and side characters. The central relationship takes a while to become the focus.

My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv9992023
A big, warm-hearted boy falls for a girl who seems impossible, and she falls back. Pure-hearted in a way that could be saccharine but somehow isn't. If you loved that Say I Love You believes in kindness, this is kindness as the entire plot.
But There's almost no conflict. If you need tension and stakes, this might feel slight.

Carole & Tuesday2019
Two strangers meet and decide to make music together on Mars. It's about the specific electricity of finding your person—less romantic than Say I Love You, but the same recognition that some connections are inexplicable and worth everything.
But It's set in space and gets increasingly surreal. If you want grounded high school romance, this goes elsewhere.

A Silent Voice: The Movie2016
A boy and a deaf girl navigate guilt, communication, and the possibility of real understanding. Like Say I Love You, it's about barriers—social, internal, communicative—and what it takes to cross them. Visually stunning and emotionally devastating.
But Heavy themes including bullying and suicide. Not a comfort watch, even as it builds toward hope.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku2020
Adults who love anime and games find love by being honest about who they are. Similar warmth to Say I Love You, but with the relief that comes from not having to hide yourself. Low-stakes, genuinely funny, about being seen.
But The animation is notably cheap and the humor is niche. If you don't find otaku culture funny, you'll find it pandering.

Midnight Run1988
Both understand that love (romantic or otherwise) means choosing someone over your survival instinct. Say I Love You does it with anime sincerity; this does it with wisecracks and a car chase. Same truth, completely different language.
A cynical bounty hunter and a gentle fugitive are forced together across America and learn each other. It's a buddy comedy about two people who shouldn't work discovering they're essential to each other—the same recognition as Say I Love You, but it's a 1980s action film, funny and gruff and completely unsentimental about intimacy.
But It's a Hollywood film from 1988 with dated action and a totally different tone. You might watch it and wonder why it's here.
