Dream High

Dream High is a Korean music-romance drama about art students chasing superstardom at a prestigious high school. It's bubbly and earnest, built on genuine musical performance and the particular ache of ambition among friends. Built for anyone who loved a good underdog story and doesn't mind their emotions served bright and unironic.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you want a school story where the ambition is loud, the training is constant, and the sentiment is worn openly, especially if you like pop music woven into the plot.

Skip it if the earnest, mood-swinging tone and the sheer amount of music may wear thin if you prefer your school drama lean, cynical or tightly plotted.

What it asks of you: Expect a long commitment: thirty-two episodes across two seasons, with comedy, singing and heartfelt moments taking turns, so settle in and let it wander.

Boys over Flowers2009

The template for modern K-dramas: wealthy boys, poorer girls, sharp banter, and genuine warmth underneath. If you loved Dream High's ensemble energy and romantic tangles, this is essential viewing.

But The rich-boy-saves-poor-girl dynamic feels dated now, and the pacing drags in the middle stretch. Some of the class commentary is tone-deaf.

Itaewon Class2020

Korean ensemble storytelling at its most ambitious: revenge, friendship, found family, and real stakes. The same generational vulnerability Dream High captures, but with weight and fury beneath it.

But It's dark and violent in ways Dream High never is. If you want lightness, this will exhaust you.

Shooting Stars1995

A love story inside the entertainment industry with the same energy Dream High has: warm, funny, and genuinely interested in how friendships survive ambition and attraction.

But It moves slowly and assumes you care about the characters immediately. If chemistry doesn't grab you by episode two, you'll lose patience.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Sing Street2016

Both show how music becomes the language friends use to understand themselves and each other. Performance is connection, not just achievement.

Irish coming-of-age where a band forms to win a girl, but becomes the point itself. Gorgeous, funny, bittersweet, with real music and genuine affection for the mess of adolescence.

But It's melancholic underneath the charm. The tone shifts in the third act and not everyone will follow it there.

Descendants of the Sun2016

Epic, glamorous K-drama romance with the same genre confidence Dream High has. Action instead of music, but same commitment to spectacle and feeling.

But The plot is silly and the politics are questionable. Heavy emotional beats sometimes land on soap-opera terrain.

A-Teen2018

South Korean web series about high school friendship and early romance. Light, generous, and genuinely funny. Dream High's spiritual cousin in tone if not budget.

But The production is clearly low-budget and it shows everywhere. Some performances are uneven.

Extraordinary You2019

Wacky K-drama that refuses to play it straight: romance, fantasy, high school chaos, and a cast that commits fully to absurdity. Same playfulness as Dream High's best moments.

But It's aggressively quirky and sometimes sacrifices logic for a joke. The meta elements won't work if you need grounded storytelling.

Thirty But Seventeen2018

Sweet ensemble romance about second chances and found family. Gentler than most K-dramas, with real affection between characters. Good palate-cleanser after something heavier.

But Very gentle. If you need conflict and stakes, it will feel thin and overly sentimental.

Natsume's Book of Friends2008

Both are fundamentally about how ambition and obligation matter less than the people you do them with. Friendship is the plot.

Japanese anime about a boy who inherits a supernatural debt and builds a found family paying it off. Quiet, episodic, deeply kind. Nothing like Dream High's surface but identical in emotional architecture.

But It's very slow and very gentle. If you need plot momentum and high stakes, it will feel like nothing happens.
