Combatants Will Be Dispatched!
- Parody
- Science fiction
- Light-hearted
A salaryman for an evil megacorp gets posted to a magical alien world with an android partner to scope out conquest prospects. It's gleefully absurd—sci-fi bureaucracy colliding with fantasy tropes, played for maximum comedy. Perfect if you want action and laughs without anything weighing you down, and you're not precious about anime fan service.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy workplace-style comedy about villains who are bad at their jobs, with a deadpan streak and a sci-fi-meets-fantasy mismatch that keeps the gags coming.
Skip it if you want a story that builds steadily toward something bigger, since this is a light, episodic romp with little interest in stakes or long-arc drama.
What it asks of you: Twelve episodes of about twenty-four minutes each, a brisk, light commitment that rewards staying alert to quick-fire jokes and shifting genre tones rather than settling in.

Hataraku Maou-sama!2013
A demon lord and his general are stranded in modern Tokyo working fast food. Same energy: fish-out-of-water chaos, corporate meetings treated as military strategy, and genuine chemistry between leads. Hilarious and weirdly heartfelt.
But The tone is gentler and more slice-of-life. If you want constant action and mayhem, it meanders more than Combatants does.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!2016
A guy and a goddess (plus misfits) play RPG-world conquest for laughs. Sharp parody of isekai tropes, anarchic energy, the same blend of action beats and character comedy. Wildly entertaining.
But Relies heavily on anime in-jokes and fan service. The first episode is slow; it takes time to find its rhythm.

Overlord2015
An overpowered skeleton mage and his followers build an empire in a fantasy world. Same premise engine: conquest from the ground up, misfit crew dynamics, mixing dark ambition with genuine comedy. Gorgeous animation.
But Darker and more plot-driven. Less joke-per-minute; takes itself seriously in stretches. Later seasons shift tone noticeably.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Revolutionary Girl Utena1997
Both use action and comedy to dismantle authority structures and corporate logic. Utena's surrealism is the anti-bureaucratic inverse of Combatants' satire of corporate machinations.
A girl challenges a shadowy student council through surreal sword duels to save a princess. Surrealist magical girl action comedy with an art-house aesthetic and genuine subversion of genre tropes. Visually stunning and utterly its own thing.
But Aggressively experimental storytelling with repeated scenes, abstraction, and deliberately mannered dialogue. Feels like performance art. Not accessible.

Space Dandy2014
A spaceman and his robot hunt aliens across the cosmos in episodic adventures. Pure genre pastiche—every episode riffs on a different sci-fi trope. Visually inventive, smart, and genuinely weird.
But Deliberately uneven in tone. Some episodes are melancholy or philosophical rather than funny. No overarching plot to hang onto.

Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann2007
Two underdogs pilot robots and fight oppression in a sprawling space opera. It's sincere about belief and hope while being absolutely bonkers. Escalates brilliantly; every episode ups the scale.
But Shifts radically in tone and genre midway through. Heavy themes about loss and responsibility kick in. Not lightweight stuff.

Mob Psycho 1002016
A middle schooler with psychic powers tries to live normally while weird supernatural cases pull him into action. Character-driven comedy with real heart, stylish fights, and a protagonist who doesn't want to be special.
But More introspective and earnest than action-packed. The humour is dry and character-based. Not a thrill ride.

Kill la Kill2013
A girl battles through a militaristic school with sentient clothing. Absurdist action comedy with unapologetic camp, stunning animation, and genuine creativity. Understands exactly what it's doing and commits fully.
But Heavy on fan service and sexuality. The plot becomes baroque and hard to follow. If you're uncomfortable with the fanservice angle, skip it entirely.

Michiko e Hatchin2008
A woman escapes prison, kidnaps a kid, and they road-trip across Brazil. Tonal whiplash: comedy, action, and real emotional weight fused together. Daring and inventive, completely singular.
But Tonal shifts are disorienting. Switches between slapstick and genuine darkness. The dub is mediocre; subtitles essential.

Sekirei2008
A schoolboy accidentally gets caught up in a tournament between magical girls called Sekirei. Action-comedy with a surprisingly likeable lead and genuine stakes underneath the chaos. Fast and fun.
But Unapologetically fan-service-heavy. Plot is thin. Exists partly as an excuse to animate attractive characters in provocative situations. Not subtle.

Excel Saga1999
Both star incompetent employees for evil organizations with android sidekicks sent to complete impossible missions. Excel is Combatants stripped of plot and pushed into pure comedic bedlam.
A hyperactive henchwoman and her android friend bungle world domination across 26 insane episodes. Pure comedy chaos—genre parody, breaking the fourth wall, absurdist jokes fired at machine-gun speed. Anarchic and brilliant.
But Aggressively dated animation. The pacing is relentless; some episodes are nearly incomprehensible. Relies on very specific anime references from the 90s.

Natsume's Book of Friends2008
Both feature leads navigating worlds they don't fully understand with loyal companions. Where Combatants explodes outward in chaos, Natsume shows the interior life of being perpetually displaced—thematic mirror image rather than tonal match.
A boy who sees spirits inherits a book of demon names and starts returning them to their owners. Quiet, melancholic supernatural comedy-drama. Gentle pacing, gorgeous animation, real emotional depth. Completely different gear.
But Slow and contemplative. No action sequences or sci-fi plotting. Each episode is a quiet story about loneliness and acceptance. Almost the opposite of bombastic fun.
