Overlord
Overlord follows Momonga, a mild-mannered gamer stranded inside his own undead-overlord avatar when his favourite MMORPG's servers finally go dark, ruling a fortress of newly sentient, fanatically loyal monsters. It's less hero's journey than competence fantasy: dry humour, elaborate scheming, and a protagonist who never has to struggle, only decide how much of this new world he wants to keep for himself.

The other MMORPG-players-trapped-in-the-game anime, swapping Overlord's power fantasy for spreadsheets, diplomacy and city-building — for anyone who loved the game logic more than the villainy.
But Far less action and much more meeting-room strategy; the pace runs patient to the point of sedate.
Sword Art Online2012
The foundational trapped-in-a-virtual-world isekai, with the same fascination in how game mechanics reshape identity and power, plus genuinely thrilling early dungeon-crawl action.
But Later seasons drift into uneven romance-driven arcs far from the sharp premise that hooked you initially.

Tron1982
Both are stories of a creator trapped inside his own system, mistaken for a deity by the beings who live there — Overlord just lets him enjoy it.
A programmer gets pulled inside the very digital world he built, discovered by resident programs who treat him as something between a god and a rumor — Momonga's predicament, decades before isekai anime existed.
But The effects and pacing are pure early-80s, and the human drama outside the game is thin by modern standards.

The Eminence in Shadow2022
A protagonist who deliberately role-plays a shadowy mastermind for an audience of devoted, oblivious followers — Overlord's keeping-up-the-villain-act comedy cranked all the way into parody.
But It's broader, sillier, and far less interested in genuine stakes or dread than Overlord ever is.
Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!2016
The isekai premise played entirely for laughs, with an equally devoted, dysfunctional party of misfits — a perfect palate-cleanser if Overlord's darker edges wore you out.
But Pure comedy with almost no stakes; if you came for scale and menace, this feels featherweight.
Goblin Slayer2018
Swaps Overlord's godlike ease for grim, tactical survival horror in the same fantasy-adventurer world, with brutal competence standing in for magic-tier power.
But Considerably darker and more violent in its opening, with little of Overlord's dry humor to soften it.
Succession2018
Overlord's real pleasure is watching Ainz's followers scheme, flatter and outdo each other serving a leader whose true intentions they can only guess at — that's the whole engine of Succession.
No swords, no magic — just a remote, unreadable leader at the center of an empire and a court of devoted, brilliant, terrifying subordinates each convinced they alone understand his will.
But Zero fantasy trappings and zero likable characters; it's corporate tragedy played dead straight, not adventure.
Kagemusha1980
Both ask what happens when playing the part of an all-powerful ruler starts to become indistinguishable from actually being one.
A petty thief is installed as the double of a dead warlord and must perform absolute authority before an army that needs to believe in him — gorgeously shot and unbearably tense.
But A slow, formal, subtitled samurai epic with no action-fantasy comfort and a far more solemn emotional register than Overlord.
