Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation
A dying salaryman wakes up as a baby in a lush fantasy world, keeping every memory and regret from his old life. What follows is less a power fantasy than a slow, obsessive study of someone trying to not waste a second chance — gorgeous, unhurried, occasionally uncomfortable, and startlingly sincere about grief, family, and self-loathing underneath the magic-school trappings.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like isekai that takes its hero's reincarnation seriously, with a long patient build, a flawed protagonist who is frank about his own failings, and fantasy worldbuilding that grows out of everyday life rather than spectacle.
Skip it if you want fast escalation or a tight plot, since the early stretch is a slow childhood and the lurid humour about the hero's appetites runs through it and can grate.
What it asks of you: Sixty-one episodes across three seasons, each around twenty-six minutes, so it wants a long commitment and patience before the adventure gets going.

But The tonal breeziness means it never digs into the discomfort or melancholy Mushoku Tensei sits in.

Flips the premise — an overpowered player stuck as an evil overlord in his old game world — for a darker, more morally slippery take on absolute competence.
But The protagonist is deliberately unsympathetic at times, and the tone is colder throughout.
Made in Abyss2017
Same obsessive world-building and coming-of-age undertow, but redirected into a descent narrative that's far more unsettling about what a fantasy world can do to a child.
But Considerably darker and more distressing — this is not comfort viewing.
The Tale of The Princess Kaguya2013
Same Japanese cultural bedrock of reincarnation and borrowed time, but rendered in a wholly different medium, register, and emotional register — quiet myth instead of loud isekai.
A hand-painted Studio Ghibli adaptation of an ancient Japanese folktale about a being born into a life she didn't choose, wrestling with mortality, family, and what it means to truly live.
But Slow, melancholic, and visually unlike anything digital-era anime does — closer to a watercolor elegy than an adventure.
Big1988
It's the mirror image of Rudeus's core discomfort — an adult mind stuck in a mismatched body — but drained of magic and played entirely for warmth and laughs instead of unease.
A kid wishes to be big and wakes up as an adult overnight — a comedy about a mind out of sync with the body it's living in, played with real sweetness by Tom Hanks.
But Broad 80s studio comedy with zero fantasy worldbuilding or stakes beyond a New York toy company.
