Kamisama Kiss
- Fantasy
- Light-hearted
A sharp-witted romantic comedy about a homeless girl who accidentally becomes a shrine goddess and must navigate divine bureaucracy, dangerous spirits, and a gorgeous fox-demon who's determined to make her life difficult. Charming, funny, and genuinely romantic—perfect if you want fantasy stakes without grimness, and banter that actually lands.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you want a light supernatural romance where a scrappy heroine's bluntness and a sulky, bickering spirit-servant carry the comedy, and you enjoy slow-building affection more than big plot turns.
Skip it if you need a plot that moves briskly, since much of the charm is in everyday shrine chores and the bickering stretches out over two seasons of gentle, repetitive banter.
What it asks of you: Expect 25-minute episodes in a light, breezy tone that rarely turns heavy, and settle in for the long haul rather than binge a single arc.

Spice and Wolf2008
A merchant and a wolf goddess banter their way across a medieval fantasy world. The chemistry is electric, the banter is sharper than sharp, and it's genuinely interested in both characters as people rather than types.
But Economics discussions and worldbuilding might feel slow if you're here purely for romance. Also ends on a kiss-cliff that drove fans wild for years.

Ouran High School Host Club2006
Fast-paced romantic comedy with a girl surrounded by beautiful men who genuinely like and respect her. The humor is character-driven, the reversals are clever, and it never loses sight of actual heart beneath the jokes.
But The anime only covers the first arc of the manga, so if you want the full story, you'll have to switch mediums. Some jokes land better on second watch.

Yona of the Dawn2014
Princess caught in political upheaval travels with a band of supernatural warriors. More action-driven than Kamisama Kiss, but with the same earnest romance, found family warmth, and a heroine who genuinely grows across the series.
But The first arc is slow while the show establishes its world. The anime also ends before the manga's conclusion, which can feel unresolved.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Natsume's Book of Friends2008
Both feature protagonists inheriting unexpected divine/supernatural responsibility and learning that the job is really about caring for beings others abandoned. Both understand that obligation can become love.
A lonely boy inherits his grandmother's supernatural gift and slowly builds a found family by returning spirits' names to them. Quiet where Kamisama is loud, melancholic where it's comedic—but shares its core belief that connection and obligation can be beautiful things.
But Episodic and slow-burn. If you're here for romantic tension and dynamic banter, this is gentler and lonelier. Some episodes are sad in ways Kamisama deliberately avoids.

Tsurune2018
A boy rediscovers archery and forms deep bonds with his team. It shares Kamisama's gift for making you care about character dynamics and finding grace in small moments. Genuinely peaceful to watch.
But There's no romance and minimal plot urgency. If you're looking for the same romantic throughline, this trades it away entirely for something quieter.

Hell Girl2005
A girl with the power to send people to hell navigates moral ambiguity and supernatural obligation. Dark where Kamisama is light, but shares that fascination with a protagonist learning to wield unexpected power.
But Episodic and genuinely unsettling in ways Kamisama never is. The tone is bleak; some episodes are genuinely disturbing rather than charming.

Ao Haru Ride2014
A girl reconnects with the boy she loved years ago, now transformed and complicated. Tender school romance with real weight to its emotions. Understands that old feelings and current reality don't always align neatly.
But Slower and more introspective than Kamisama. If you want the supernatural adventure, this is purely grounded, contemporary high school romance.

Beyond Evil2021
Two detectives obsess over solving a serial murder case and each other. Tense, propulsive, with genuine character depth. The obsession that drives them is as compelling as anything a god could demand.
But Brutal crime drama about the absolute worst of human nature. Kamisama is warm and often funny; this is claustrophobic and sometimes cruel.

Carole & Tuesday2019
Two girls meet on Mars, become musicians, and spend the season defying AI overlords through the power of song. Earnest, visually gorgeous, full of heart. A very different world but the same belief in connection overcoming odds.
But More episodic than Kamisama, and the sci-fi setting might not land the same way fantasy does. The second half shifts tones in ways some viewers resist.

Daria1997
Nanami and Daria are structurally the same character—competent, sarcastic, surrounded by chaos—forced to navigate a world where they're simultaneously powerless and responsible for keeping everyone alive. Both shows believe that being the only sane person is funny, not tragic.
A smart, sardonic girl navigates high school surrounded by ridiculous people she can't help but care for. American live-action, completely grounded in reality—but the same character chemistry, the same bone-dry humor about incompetent authority figures, the same secret warmth beneath the sarcasm.
But No supernatural elements, no romance to speak of. If you want fantasy adventure, this is 1990s suburbia. The animation is deliberately flat and retro, which looks cheap until you realize it's the style.

Midnight Occult Civil Servants2019
Both shows find the absurdity in divine bureaucracy—the paperwork, the protocols, the eternal annoyance of navigating a system that wasn't built with your comfort in mind. Both understand that the best comedy lives in that friction between human decency and cosmic indifference.
Young government employees handle supernatural incidents across Tokyo with budget constraints and bureaucratic nonsense. Sharper and weirder than Kamisama, blending horror with genuine procedural logic. The chemistry between the three leads crackles.
But Only one season and it ends abruptly. Tonal shifts from comedy to genuine body horror might whiplash you. Some supernatural incidents are genuinely disturbing rather than charming.
