Ranma ½
Other titles called Ranma ½: the 2024 series (NTV).
A martial artist cursed to transform into a girl when splashed with cold water navigates engagement, chaos, and denial of growing feelings in a house full of equally ridiculous people. Ranma ½ is fast-paced slapstick with genuine heart, built on the simple engine of mistaken identity and escalating absurdity. It's for anyone who likes their romance served with a side of head-mallet and doesn't mind a premise that's completely unhinged.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you enjoy farce built on escalating misunderstandings and a romantic rivalry that keeps crashing into slapstick, with martial arts fights punctuating the chaos like punchlines.
Skip it if you want a story that moves forward; this is episodic, with the same gags and standoffs recurring across a long run, and its humour can feel repetitive.
What it asks of you: A long commitment: 161 episodes of half-hour installments, so it rewards dipping in and out, and it stays bright and loud rather than slow or sombre.

If you liked this
Urusei Yatsura1981
A spiritual ancestor that does what Ranma perfected—rapid-fire gags, romantic chaos, and an alien-human couple whose constant fighting masks something tender. Lum and Ataru's dynamic is the DNA you'll recognize in Ranma and Akane.
But Older animation, much looser pacing, and the comedy lands on different targets; you might find it slower and sometimes cruder than what you're used to.

InuYasha2000
Same DNA from the same creator: a boy and girl bickering constantly while fighting monsters and growing genuinely attached. It has Ranma's ability to be sincere about emotion while never losing the comedy, with added mythology and higher stakes.
But It's 167 episodes and sometimes drags its plot. The early charm gets diluted as it works toward romance resolution in ways that might feel slower than you want.

Taiho Shichau zo1996
Traffic cops with ridiculous chemistry and constant physical comedy that escalates into absurdity. Fast, warm, and genuinely funny without requiring your brain to do anything but enjoy the ride.
But Lower stakes than Ranma; it's pure sitcom energy with no romantic tension, so it feels lighter and less textured if depth matters to you.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Dirty Pair: Affair on Nolandia1985
Both are built on the engine of people who trust each other completely while denying it, forced into proximity and chaos, where the real story is that they're already a team.
Two women who bicker like Ranma and Akane, sent on impossible missions, causing collateral damage and solving problems through competence wrapped in comedy. Same rapid-fire energy, same genuine partnership under denial, but sci-fi action instead of cursed romance.
But It's from an earlier era with different animation sensibilities; the comedy is wilder and less character-driven, and the romantic subtext is about friendship, not attraction, which is a different flavor entirely.

Maison Ikkoku1986
A genuine romance wrapped in comedy and slice-of-life gentleness. If you want to see where the soft side of Ranma's heart comes from, this is that show—same creator, more committed to actual emotion.
But It's much slower and more contemplative; the comedy is quiet and character-based rather than physical, and it's not funny in the laugh-out-loud way Ranma is.

School Rumble2004
High school comedy that borrows liberally from Ranma's playbook: ensemble cast, physical gags, romantic entanglements nobody can communicate about, and genuine moments of sweetness buried under absurdity.
But It feels derivative and sometimes tries too hard; the characters are thinner, and the jokes repeat themselves because it's working with a smaller set of ideas.

Azuki-chan1995
A little gem that captures Ranma's speed and sincerity without the transformation curse. It's pure chemistry, rapid-fire comedy, and the kind of unguarded affection that breaks through between people who won't admit they like each other.
But Shorter run and less developed world; it's more sketch than narrative, and if you need ongoing plot, it'll feel thin.

Natsume's Book of Friends2008
Both understand that the real comedy isn't the circumstance; it's watching someone pretend not to care about people they've grown attached to, and both nail that moment when the pretense cracks.
A gentle supernatural series that shares Ranma's ability to balance comedy with genuine emotion, but inverts the tone: quiet magic, folklore, and a boy learning to open his heart instead of fighting to close it. Same warmth, completely different register.
But It's deeply melancholic and slow; if you want rapid-fire jokes and slapstick, this is the opposite—meditative, contemplative, sometimes sad without warning.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners2022
At its heart, both are about people whose genuine affection for each other is the only real thing they have, expressed through action and coded language instead of words, with physical comedy replaced by stakes.
A neon-drenched action series with genuine character chemistry, humor buried in dialogue, and two people who can't admit they matter to each other while literally risking everything for each other. It has Ranma's romantic DNA in a completely different coat.
But It's adult, violent, and ends in tragedy; the mood is noir and desperate rather than buoyant, and if you're looking for the lightness of Ranma, this will feel like being hit by a truck.
