Hanazakari no Kimitachi e: Ikemen Paradise

A girl crosses an ocean, disguises herself as a boy, and infiltrates an all-boys school to be near her athletic idol. It's a fizzy romantic comedy wrapped around gender comedy that leans hard into shoujo manga energy: breathless, playful, warm-hearted. Perfect if you're in the mood for something that knows exactly what it is and doesn't apologize for the melodrama.

Boys over Flowers2009

Same sparkling romantic chaos, similar manga adaptation energy, and a girl surrounded by beautiful boys with secrets. It has the same swoony-yet-absurd tone that makes you feel sixteen again.

But The pacing sprawls across 25 episodes; commitment required. Some viewers find the wealthy-boy fantasy elements dated or eyeroll-inducing.

Mischievous Kiss2010

Another manga romance about a girl pursuing a boy against the odds, with genuine chemistry and that same blend of comedy and swoon. Lighter and more optimistic than most shoujo adaptations.

But The girl's cheerfulness can feel relentless. Very plot-light; if you need narrative momentum, this will test your patience.

Ouran High School Host Club2006

Another girl-disguises-herself story, but animated and sharper in its comedy. It has the same affectionate mockery of shoujo tropes and a similarly found-family warmth underneath.

But Being anime, it looks radically different; the tone is campier. If you want live-action chemistry, this won't deliver it.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Ranma ½1989

Both use forced gender disguise not as a plot device but as a way to explore attraction and identity as comedy rather than crisis.

The godfather of gender-swap comedy and romance. A boy cursed to turn into a girl is the inverse premise, but both live in the same world of romantic chaos and physical comedy that refuses to take gender seriously.

But It's anime from the late '80s, so the look is radically unfamiliar. Also far longer (161 episodes); this is commitment.

Witch's Romance2014

A more mature take on the secret-identity-in-school romance, with better acting and a slightly darker edge. Still romantic, but sharper and less cartoonish.

But It's Korean, not Japanese, so the cultural texture is different. Also less comedically broad; some miss the airiness of pure shoujo.

My Absolute Boyfriend2019

A manga romance with similar playfulness and a magical twist instead of disguise. Fast-moving, fun, and doesn't overstay its welcome at 10 episodes.

But The premise is even sillier than Hanazakari; requires full buy-in to fantasy logic. Some find it saccharine.

Revolutionary Girl Utena1997

Both centre girls in all-boys spaces wrestling with identity and belonging, but Utena asks harder questions about why that fantasy matters and what it costs.

An anime that deconstructs shoujo romance entirely. A girl in a boys' school, disguises, impossible love, but filtered through surrealism and genuine emotional pain. It's what happens when you take the formula seriously.

But Deeply strange and sometimes difficult. Not comfort viewing; this is art that challenges rather than soothes.
