The Ancient Magus' Bride opens with a suicidal teenager selling herself into slavery, only to be bought by a skull-headed sorcerer who names her his apprentice, then his bride. What follows is dense, gorgeous folklore-fantasy — faeries, alchemy, dragons — wrapped tightly around real trauma, self-worth, and the discomfort of loving someone who barely understands what love should look like.

Strip away the romance and you get the show's other half: a wandering figure moving through rural folklore, treating supernatural affliction with quiet, careful expertise and real reverence for the uncanny.
But Almost no continuing story or romance; if you loved Chise and Elias's relationship specifically, this offers nothing like it.

Beauty and the Beast1946
Mahoutsukai no Yome is a modern retelling of the beast-bridegroom fairy tale; Cocteau's film is the original template for the dread-and-longing atmosphere around a monstrous suitor, decades before anime picked it up.
Cocteau's surreal black-and-white fairy tale, all candelabra-arms and living statues, is where the beautiful-girl-moves-in-with-a-monstrous-suitor story first got its full cinematic language — eerie, sensuous, and unmistakably an ancestor.
But Stagey, deliberately theatrical pacing and 1940s special effects; if you need modern rhythm or CGI spectacle, the artifice may distract rather than enchant.

A centuries-old wolf god and a young merchant travel together, negotiating a slow, prickly intimacy across an unequal footing — the same tension between ancient and young, inhuman and human, minus the horror.
But It's an economics-and-trade-route travelogue at heart; expect haggling over pepper prices, not spellcraft.

A cursed girl moves in with a vain, powerful, not-quite-human magician and slowly becomes essential to his household and his healing — the same mentor-tips-into-romance shape, filtered through Miyazaki's warmth.

If it's the atmosphere you crave — worlds where wonder and horror sit uncomfortably close together — this delivers that in concentrated, darker form, following a determined child into folklore made literal.
But Considerably grimmer and more graphic; its treatment of childhood suffering is far less gentle than what you've just watched.

A gentler palace-fantasy romance for when you want the soft-magic, slow-burn courtship without any of the darkness — herbalism, kindness, and a couple who actually communicate like adults.
But Almost nothing bad happens; if you liked the shadows and unease, this will feel weightless by comparison.
Penny Dreadful2014
Both hinge on a mentor figure more monster than man guiding a vulnerable outsider through the occult, but Penny Dreadful strips away the fairy-tale gentleness and plays the same premise as full gothic horror.
Victorian London, occult mentorship, and a small found-family of monsters and outcasts circling questions of damnation and love — the R-rated, horror-soaked cousin, asking the same 'can something inhuman truly love you' question with teeth bared.
But Considerably more violent, sexual, and despairing; it wants to unsettle you, not comfort you, and rarely offers the tenderness you might be craving.
Wolf Children2012
Where Mahoutsukai dwells in the courtship of human and inhuman, Wolf Children shows what comes after: the unglamorous, devoted, lifelong work of loving something not quite human, minus any magic-mentor structure.
A young woman falls for a man who's secretly a wolf, then raises their children alone after his death — Hosoda's quiet, devastating film about loving someone not fully human is the future this story only gestures toward.
But No mystery, magic school, or romance-in-progress here — just patient, melancholic domestic drama; expect tears over plot twists.
