Antonioni's camera lingers on empty landscapes and blank faces longer than feels comfortable. It's slow, chilly and gorgeous; for viewers willing to sit with unresolved feeling rather than plot, it rewrites what cinema could be about.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love slow films where mood, landscape and silence carry the story more than plot, and you don't mind being left with questions.

Skip it if you need momentum and a clear through-line, because this drifts for long stretches and its 144 minutes can feel like a test of patience.

What it asks of you: Long, unhurried takes and scenes that end before you expect them to, with the emotional weight landing in glances and pauses rather than dialogue.

Twin Peaks1990

Both use a woman's disappearance not as a puzzle to solve but as a doorway into the guilt, distraction and strangeness of everyone left behind — and both refuse, defiantly, to give you the answer.

A dead girl's disappearance becomes an excuse to spend hours inside the strange, damaged people left behind — the same trick L'Avventura plays, except stretched into a serial and gone gleefully surreal.

But Tonal whiplash between soap opera, comedy and horror; nothing about it is austere.

Last Year at Marienbad1961

Made the same year, it takes Antonioni's disorientation further still, dissolving time and memory in a baroque hotel where nobody's story quite agrees with anyone else's.

But Deliberately, defiantly incomprehensible; it will frustrate anyone hoping for even the ambiguous clarity L'Avventura offers.

Picnic at Hanging Rock1975

Schoolgirls vanish on an outcrop in the Australian bush and are never satisfactorily found, and the film is far more interested in the eerie afterglow than the mystery — exactly like Antonioni's island.

But The dreamlike pacing and sun-bleached dread might feel too genteel if you wanted the mystery solved.

La Dolce Vita1960

Released the same year, Fellini's own portrait of moneyed Italian ennui trades Antonioni's austerity for carnival excess but arrives at the same emptiness underneath the glamour.

But Busier, funnier, more populated — a very different rhythm if it's the stillness of L'Avventura you loved.

The Passenger1975

Antonioni again, with Jack Nicholson as a journalist who steals a dead man's identity and simply drifts, the plot dissolving into landscape and mood in that same hypnotic way.

But Even the "action" here is deliberately anticlimactic; patience is mandatory.

Persona1966

Bergman's two women merge and dissolve into each other on an isolated island, trading Antonioni's social ennui for something rawer and more frightening about identity itself.

But Stranger and more formally aggressive, closer to horror in its unease than to romantic drama.

Vertigo1958

Hitchcock's obsessive romance is built around a woman's disappearance and a man remaking his lover in a dead woman's image — proof the same doubling and dread can also power pure Hollywood suspense.

But Far more plot-driven and melodramatic; the mystery here does resolve, just not comfortably.

Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans1927

Both hinge on a boat crossing that becomes the hinge of a relationship's moral collapse, and both trust landscape and faces over dialogue to carry guilt.

A silent melodrama where a husband takes his wife on a boat trip while contemplating killing her, then spends the rest of the film consumed by guilt he can barely name — decades before Antonioni, the same moral rot on water.

But Silent-era melodrama with title cards and swelling orchestral cues; the emotional register is far more overt than Antonioni's chill.

Triangle2009

Same premise stripped of prestige — a boat, a disappearance, a survivor who can't trust her own memory — replayed as pulp instead of art film.

A woman boards a yacht with friends, something goes wrong, and the film loops her through dread and disorientation with no clean explanation offered — Antonioni's anxiety rebuilt as a nasty little horror-thriller.

But Genuinely trashy and twisty where L'Avventura is patient and philosophical; this wants to unsettle, not to ache.
