Monster horror

Creature from the Black Lagoon is Universal's last great monster movie, all rubber-suited menace and eerie underwater grace. Originally shot in 3-D, it turns a jungle expedition into a slow-burn stalking picture, with the Gill-man gliding beneath an oblivious swimmer in one of horror's most sensuous set-pieces. It's B-movie pulp with real atmosphere - creature feature, adventure yarn, and quiet tragedy about the last of something ancient, all at once.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love old-school monster movies built on atmosphere, underwater stalking shots and a creature who is more tragic than terrifying, the kind of creature feature that still feels handsome after seventy years.

Skip it if you need quick pacing or modern effects, since the first act is slow, the dialogue is stiff by today's standards, and the monster reveal takes its time arriving.

What it asks of you: About 80 minutes, unhurried, with long stretches of jungle exploration and boat travel before the scares. Patience pays off, but you have to meet it halfway.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Ponyo2008

Same premise as the Gill-man's obsession, played completely straight as innocent devotion rather than monstrous fixation - it shows you what the story looks like with the horror frame removed.

Miyazaki takes the exact same shape - an amphibious being drawn to a human, willing to cross over entirely to be with them - and makes it tender, funny and gorgeous instead of frightening.

But It's a gentle PG family film; anyone wanting rubber-suited menace will find this the wrong film entirely.

Tremors1990

A gleeful, self-aware creature feature that treats man-versus-beast-in-hostile-terrain with real craft and a sense of humour the original never had.

But Its comic tone is a genuine mismatch if what you want is dread played straight.

The Thing1982

Paranoia and practical-effects monster horror at their absolute peak - claustrophobic, nasty, and unforgettable once seen.

But Far gorier and bleaker, with none of the romantic undertow that makes the Creature almost sympathetic.

Alien1979

Swaps jungle lagoon for cargo ship but keeps the same slow-build stalking structure and a creature that's beautiful and lethal in equal measure.

But Colder and sleeker - proper science fiction dread rather than pulp adventure.

Predator1987

Same jungle setting, same idea of an elite team outmatched by something smarter than them - muscular, propulsive action-horror.

But Pure macho spectacle with none of the tragic ambiguity that haunts the original.

Released the same year, Disney's lavish underwater adventure shares the fascination with the deep as an alien, dangerous frontier - and it looks gorgeous.

But Family adventure first, horror a distant second - there's barely a scare in it.

An earlier Universal monster on the same slow-burn plot - an ancient thing awakened and fixated on a woman - atmosphere over spectacle.

But Much slower and stagier, building dread through suggestion rather than showing much at all.

It answers, in documented fact rather than rubber and swimsuits, the question Creature only gestures at - what it would actually mean to be truly known by something from underwater.

A real filmmaker forms an actual, patient bond with a wild octopus off South Africa's coast, and it's as strange and moving as any fiction about an unknowable creature in the water.

But No plot, no monster, no danger - slow, contemplative nonfiction, the opposite of a creature feature's thrills.

Nosferatu1922

Same bones as Creature - a monster from an old, dark place fixates on a woman who belongs to another man - proving the formula predates sound itself by thirty-two years.

Murnau's shadow-drenched vampire is the template for an ancient monster disturbed from its home and obsessed with a woman engaged to someone else - the Gill-man's silent-era grandfather, still unsettling a century later.

But Silent, slow by modern standards, and its rhythms will feel genuinely alien if you're used to sound and pace.
