A team of elite commandos gets picked off one by one in the jungle by something that outclasses them completely. It starts as macho one-liners and bulging biceps, then curdles into genuine dread as the hunters realise they're being hunted. Stan Winston's creature design still holds up, and the tension is real. For anyone who wants 80s action with a horror spine.

Cameron's other great 'soldiers get outmatched by something alien' film, made the year before, with the same instinct for turning firepower into false confidence. Ripley's the toughest one in the room.

But More crowded and plot-heavy than Predator's stripped-down chase; less pure atmosphere, more mission structure.

The Thing1982

Carpenter's isolated-outpost paranoia thriller, with practical creature effects that still make people flinch. Same DNA of a group being hunted from within by something unknowable.

But Colder and bleaker, with far less action and zero one-liners; this one wants to unsettle you, not pump you up.

The direct sequel, swapping jungle for a sweltering, crime-ridden LA and turning the volume up to eleven. Danny Glover holds the screen and the gore gets gleefully excessive.

But Messier and sillier than the original, with a plot that mostly exists to get to the next kill.

The Most Dangerous Game1932

Predator is this exact premise with a rifle upgrade — a superior hunter stalking outmatched prey through dense jungle for the thrill of it. This is the 1932 template, decades before Schwarzenegger.

A shipwrecked hunter is stalked through a jungle island by an aristocrat who hunts men for sport. Pre-Code, brisk, and the direct ancestor of every 'human as prey' story since.

But Creaky black-and-white filmmaking with stiff dialogue by modern standards — this is one for people curious about where the idea started.

Peak absurd Schwarzenegger, two years before Predator, all quips and improbable one-man-army violence. If you want the id without the horror, this is it.

But Pure cartoon logic with none of Predator's dread or craft — this is comfort junk food, not a slow burn.

Die Hard1988

Same era, same appetite for a lone tough guy improvising against superior numbers, but confined to a skyscraper instead of a jungle. Tense, funny, endlessly rewatchable.

But No creature, no sci-fi — if it's the alien-hunter angle you're chasing, this won't scratch that itch.

A whole roster of 80s action stars playing dress-up as mercenaries, essentially a fan letter to films exactly like Predator. Loud, nostalgic, unapologetically dumb fun.

But Self-aware to a fault, and the jokes about its own cast can undercut the tension it's trying to build.

A small town picked off by something faster and stronger during a month of Arctic darkness — the isolation and dwindling-numbers structure will feel very familiar.

But Vampires instead of aliens, and a bleaker, more hopeless tone than Predator ever goes for.

Tremors1990

A small group trapped by an unseen predator, but played with a grin instead of a growl. Kevin Bacon and a town of oddballs against giant worms.

But Comedic where Predator is tense — if you want dread, this swaps it out for genuine goofiness.

The Running Man1987

Schwarzenegger again, same year, hunted for sport by armored killers on live television. Trashy, prescient about reality TV, and a lot of fun.

But Broader satire and more camp than Predator's straight-faced survival tension — tonally a different animal.

Grizzly Man2005

Both are about the moment a human realises he isn't the top of the food chain after all. Herzog trades jungle warfare for real footage and turns Predator's fantasy into unbearable fact.

Werner Herzog's documentary about a man who lived among Alaskan grizzlies and was eventually killed by one. Haunting, philosophical, genuinely frightening in its own quiet way.

But No fiction, no action — it's a meditation on hubris and nature's indifference, slow and unsettling rather than thrilling.

Annihilation2018

Same skeleton — a small team, an alien intelligence, attrition in a hostile landscape — but stripped of testosterone and replaced with existential unease. It's Predator's arthouse cousin.

A team enters a mutating zone where something alien is rewriting the rules of survival, one member vanishing at a time. Gorgeous, eerie, and genuinely strange by the end.

But Cerebral and ambiguous where Predator is visceral and clear — this trades machismo and resolution for dread and open questions.
