Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love golden-age science fiction built on big ideas, gorgeous old-school matte-painted worlds and a mystery that unfolds through talk as much as action, a bit like the cerebral Forbidden Planet-era pulp that inspired later space operas.

Skip it if you need brisk pacing and constant spectacle, since much of the running time is spent in conversation and exploration, and the 1950s dialogue and effects will feel stagey to anyone raised on modern visuals.

What it asks of you: Settle in for about ninety-eight minutes of unhurried talk and slow reveals, with the tension building gradually rather than arriving in bursts, and a willingness to take its ideas seriously.

The Tempest2010

Forbidden Planet is a secret adaptation of Shakespeare's play — Morbius is Prospero, Altaira is Miranda, Robby is Ariel, the id monster is Caliban. Taymor's film, with Helen Mirren as a gender-swapped Prospera, brings the original text back into view.

Once you know Forbidden Planet is The Tempest with a ray gun, going back to the source is genuinely revelatory — a wizard-scientist, an isolated island, a daughter who's never met another man, and a spirit who does his bidding.

But It's Shakespeare's actual verse, delivered as heightened theatrical spectacle — a big swing in tone from spaceship adventure.

Alien1979

Same bones — small crew, distress signal, unwelcoming planet, invisible menace — but filed down into pure claustrophobic horror. See what happens when the adventure gets nasty.

But It's relentlessly tense and genuinely frightening where Forbidden Planet is, underneath the dread, an adventure story.

The Thing from Another World1951

Another isolated-outpost creature feature from the same decade, all clipped dialogue and mounting paranoia. Great if you want the era's other flavor of alien dread.

But Black and white, small-scale, and far more procedural in tone than Forbidden Planet's Technicolor, symphonic spectacle of a planet.

Solaris1972

Tarkovsky's version of 'the planet reflects your own mind back at you,' done as slow, aching art cinema rather than pulp. A serious cousin to Morbius's problem.

But Nearly three hours of contemplative Russian sci-fi with almost no action — a very different pace and mood.

Silent Running1972

A gentler, more melancholy space story with a beloved robot companion and a conscience about what humanity leaves behind. Sweet where Forbidden Planet is stern.

But Low-budget seventies effects and an earnest, sentimental streak that some will find dated or soft.

More proof that fifties Hollywood could do full-blooded, Technicolor, effects-driven sci-fi spectacle, with genuine menace humming underneath all that Martian wonder, destruction, and religious dread.

But Straighter alien-invasion story with far less of the psychological depth Forbidden Planet quietly reaches for underneath the spectacle.

Planet of the Apes1968

Another stranded-crew, isolated-world story that turns out to be about us all along, complete with a final twist that permanently rewired what science fiction was allowed to say.

But Its satire is broader and blunter, and the makeup effects show their age more than Forbidden Planet's matte paintings.

The Babadook2014

Forbidden Planet's real villain is Morbius's own unconscious, given monstrous shape by his own scientific power. The Babadook runs the identical circuit — a mother's buried grief and rage manifesting as a literal creature in the house — just swapped from Cold War pulp into intimate domestic horror.

If the idea that your own repressed mind could kill everyone around you was the scariest part of Forbidden Planet, this Australian horror film takes that exact engine and turns it up to unbearable.

But No spaceships, no Robby, no adventure — just a small, painful, very effective horror film about grief.

The Atomic Cafe1982

Forbidden Planet's pulp adventure is really a Cold War fable about science outrunning conscience — a fear the era lived with daily. This archival documentary, built entirely from real newsreels and civil-defense films of the same period, shows you the actual anxiety Forbidden Planet was dressing up as entertainment.

Watching real 1950s footage of atomic dread and duck-and-cover drills makes Forbidden Planet's subtext land differently — you realize the id monster had a real-world address.

But It's a documentary with zero narration and no plot, assembled entirely from unsettling found footage — a very different kind of watch.
