A documentary that makes, in plain nonfiction terms, the exact case the Wire spent sixty hours dramatizing: the drug war as a self-perpetuating machine that consumes the poor to no purpose. David Simon himself shows up to say so directly.

But Op-ed in tone where the Wire trusted you to arrive at conclusions yourself—less drama, more argument.

But Warmer and more forgiving than the Wire ever allows itself to be; hope is on the table here in a way it rarely is in Baltimore.

The Wire's founding idea—that a city, not a case, is the protagonist—already fully formed here fifty-plus years earlier.

A pioneering, on-location police procedural shot in the real streets of New York, decades before it was fashionable, that insists the city itself is the true main character.

But Dated by voiceover narration and a much simpler moral universe than anything the Wire allows.
