But Deliberately anti-narrative and emotionally withholding — if you want arcs and people to root for, this will frustrate you.

City of God2002

Kids recruited into violence before they understand what it will cost them — the same pipeline Gomorra traces, compressed into two furious, unforgettable hours of Brazilian slum crime.

But More kinetic and visually dazzling than Gomorra's flat realism; it wants to thrill you a little, not just implicate you.

Breaking Bad2008

Watch an ordinary man calcify into someone he'd have despised — the same slow moral erosion Gomorra puts its characters through, here dressed up as a chemistry teacher's crisis.

But It splits attention across three continents and loses some of the suffocating intimacy that makes Gomorra work.

My Brilliant Friend2018

Same Naples, same poverty-and-violence undertow, adapted from another towering Italian book — except here the crime is background noise to two girls' friendship, showing the ordinary world the Camorra preys on.

A tender, devastating epic about female friendship set in the same violent, claustrophobic Naples neighbourhoods that Gomorra's men grew up terrorising, seen from the other side entirely.

But No shootouts or criminal plotting here — it's literary, interior, and moves at a completely different pace.

Salvatore Giuliano1962

Francesco Rosi's fractured, documentary-style dissection of a real Sicilian bandit's rise and death effectively invented the unsentimental Italian crime-realism that Gomorra is still, six decades later, working inside of.

A landmark of Italian crime cinema told almost entirely through flashback and inquest, refusing its real-life bandit subject any myth, romance, or tidy explanation.

But Black-and-white, elliptical, and assumes real knowledge of Sicilian history — a genuine commitment, not a casual watch.
