Television series

4 Blocks Zero

A prequel doing the hard work of explaining how a mild Beirut refugee named Ali became Toni Hamady, Berlin's most feared clan boss. Set in the chaotic, reunified 1990s city, it swaps the original's slick present-day menace for something scrappier and more desperate — a family scrambling for a foothold, one bad decision away from ruin. Watch it for the origin story, not just the nostalgia.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like crime stories built around a family's rise, where power comes from loyalty, hustle and survival in a city that doesn't welcome you.

Skip it if you want a leisurely character study or a sprawling saga; this is a lean, plot-driven run with little room to breathe between its beats.

What it asks of you: Expect a lean run of eight episodes that moves quickly, keeps its focus tight, and asks you to follow shifting alliances without much hand-holding.

The Godfather Part II1974

The gold standard for immigrant-family-becomes-empire storytelling, cutting between an outsider's arrival in a new country and the cold machine his legacy became. Structurally, this is the blueprint.

But It's three and a half hours of slow-burn tragedy, not action — patience required.

Top Boy2011

East London instead of Berlin, but the same unglamorous truth: crime as the only available ladder for people the system has already written off. Sharp, humane, never romanticised.

But Its slang-heavy dialogue and slower character work can feel a world away from the more operatic 4 Blocks style.

Gomorra: La Serie2014

Naples' Camorra with zero glamour and zero mercy — clan loyalty, generational bloodshed, kids inheriting violence like a family trade. If you want the ruthlessness turned up, start here.

But Bleak almost to the point of exhausting; there's very little relief or warmth in five seasons.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

Scarface1932

Same engine, ninety years earlier: an outsider transforms himself into a feared boss, and the film asks what got sacrificed to make that transformation possible.

Decades before Berlin's clans, this pre-Code original told the exact same story — an ambitious immigrant clawing his way up through Prohibition-era crime — with startling speed and cynicism.

But Creaky by modern standards: fast dialogue, dated performances, no colour, no CGI blood.

City of God2002

A kinetic, unforgettable portrait of kids radicalised into crime by poverty and geography, told with the same restless energy and moral clarity 4 Blocks aims for.

But The violence is sudden and unsentimental — it doesn't soften the horror for entertainment.

Animal Kingdom2016

An Australian crime family run by a terrifying matriarch, full of the same simmering sibling rivalry and inherited criminality. Sun-bleached and slow-cooking dread instead of Berlin grey.

But Takes a season to fully click; the pacing rewards patience more than instant hooks.

Babylon Berlin2017

Same city, earlier decade — Weimar-era Berlin's corruption, refugees, and criminal underworlds collide in a lush, paranoid, visually stunning production. A companion piece in spirit if not plot.

But Denser and more political than a straight crime drama; expect conspiracy plotting over street-level grit.

American Gangster2007

An outsider builds a drug empire through discipline and ruthlessness while the city around him corrodes. Denzel Washington makes ambition and menace look like the same thing.

But Fairly conventional biopic shape; it plays safer than the messier, rawer 4 Blocks universe.

Snowfall2017

Watching a neighbourhood and a young man transform together as the crack epidemic takes hold — origin story energy, told across years, with real consequence.

But Six seasons is a big commitment, and the back half loses some of the early tightness.

Peaky Blinders2013

If you want the family-dynasty crime saga with more swagger and style — sharp suits, sharper knives, and a rise from post-war poverty to underworld royalty.

But Leans theatrical and stylised where 4 Blocks stays grounded; tone is closer to myth than realism.

Peaky Blinders poster

Persepolis2007

Strip away the gangster plot and 4 Blocks Zero is a refugee-family story; this is the same displacement and identity-loss, told with total sincerity instead of violence.

An animated memoir of a girl growing up as her country collapses and her family becomes exiles — funny, furious, and tender in ways a crime drama rarely allows itself.

But No guns, no plot momentum in the thriller sense — it's introspective and drawn in stark black-and-white.

Succession2018

The genre changes from crime to corporate satire, but the structural question stays identical — what does becoming the boss cost the person you used to be?

Swap street corners for boardrooms and you get the same rot: a family patriarch, warring heirs, and children reshaping themselves entirely to inherit power they're not sure they even want.

But Bloodless in the literal sense — all the violence is verbal, and if you want action, this won't deliver it.
