Ridley Scott's 1970s Harlem epic splits its attention evenly between a heroin kingpin building an empire on stolen Army planes and the incorruptible cop hunting him. It's glossy, patient, and more interested in parallel codes of honour than shootouts. Denzel and Crowe never share a scene until the end, and the film is richer for the wait. Good for anyone who likes their crime sagas slow-cooked and morally symmetrical.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy slow-burning crime stories where two methodical people circle each other across years, and the pleasure lies in watching careful work, moral compromise and period texture build rather than in shootouts.

Skip it if you want a tight, propulsive thriller, since at 157 minutes it lingers on paperwork, family life and quiet negotiation, and the gunfire arrives in measured bursts rather than constant bursts.

What it asks of you: Settle in for a long, unhurried haul with two parallel storylines that only meet later, and expect a steady, serious tone with few easy laughs.

Same engine, legal costume: an outsider spots a system nobody's exploiting properly, scales it ruthlessly, and pays for it in soul rather than prison time.

Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc, ruthlessly building the McDonald's empire on borrowed ideas and broken partnerships — capitalism doing legally what Lucas does illegally.

But There's no violence and no cops, so if the crime itself was the draw, this will feel oddly toothless.

Carlito's Way1993

A drug lord trying to go straight, told with real melancholy and De Palma's showiest camerawork — the tragic mirror to Lucas's empire-building.

But It's slower and sadder than you'd expect, more elegy than thriller.
