Slick, talky, endlessly clever without showing off. Great for anyone who likes their crime movies with a brain and a grin.

But Looser and scrappier than Lee's precision job — it wanders where Inside Man tightens the screws.

Mann's cop-and-robber epic gives you the professional's-eye-view of both sides of the law, same as Inside Man, but stretched to operatic length with a shootout that rewired the genre.

Inside Man's obsession with process — the plan executed with total precision while the audience tries to spot the seam — is Rififi's invention. This is the ancestor Lee is quietly paying tribute to.

The French film that basically invented the modern heist movie — a wordless, half-hour robbery sequence so meticulous that real thieves reportedly copied its methods. Cool, patient, and hugely influential.

But Black and white, subtitled, and slow by modern standards — it earns its tension rather than manufacturing it.

Training Day2001

Washington in his other great morally-slippery-cop mode, this time as the corruption rather than the man investigating it. His Oscar-winning turn is a masterclass in charm curdling into menace.

But Blunter and pulpier — one wild day rather than Inside Man's patient unspooling.

American Gangster2007

Washington and Ridley Scott build a sprawling, handsome crime epic around a man who runs his empire like a business — the same procedural pleasure Inside Man takes in watching a plan executed well.

But It's a rise-and-fall biopic at heart, with none of Inside Man's tight single-location tension.

The Town2010

Affleck's Boston heist thriller is the closest recent mainstream cousin: careful planning, a cop closing in, and a robbery crew you root for more than you should.

But Trades Inside Man's cerebral misdirection for straightforward action and a romance subplot.

Samuel L. Jackson plays a hostage negotiator who becomes the hostage-taker, framed for a crime he didn't commit — the same cat-and-mouse-through-a-locked-door tension, dialled up to blockbuster volume.

But Broader and more explosive; subtlety isn't really on the menu here.

Reservoir Dogs1992

The heist has already gone wrong before the film even starts, and everything is reconstructed in flashback and tense standoff — a scrappier, bloodier cousin to Inside Man's puzzle-box structure.

But Far more violent and profane, with none of Lee's slickness or social commentary.

Widows2018

Steve McQueen's heist thriller hides a state-of-the-city argument inside genre thrills, just as Lee does — and it has a late reveal that rearranges everything you thought the film was about.

But Juggles more subplots and characters than Inside Man, which can dilute the tension.

Chicken Run2000

Strip away the genre trappings and Chicken Run runs on the exact same engine as Inside Man — elaborate plan, ticking clock, a reveal about who's actually orchestrating events — just wearing a much friendlier costume.

Aardman's claymation classic is, underneath the feathers, a prison-break heist movie: a meticulous escape plan, a countdown, a mastermind, and a twist on who's really running the operation.

But It's a kids' film about chickens, which may be a hard sell if you want your heist thrillers to stay adult.

The Imposter2012

Both films are built on the slow realization that you've misread who holds the power in the room — Inside Man plays it as a game, The Imposter as a genuine, unsettling act of human manipulation.

A jaw-dropping true-crime documentary about a Frenchman who convinces a Texas family he's their long-missing son. Told through interviews and re-enactments that keep pulling the rug out.

But This is real deception with real victims — heavier and sadder than anything Lee's caper allows itself to be.
