Det. William "Bunk" Moreland

Bunk Moreland is a Baltimore homicide detective, McNulty's steady partner and foil: a rumpled, cigar-chomping company man who solves murders through patient, old-fashioned police work rather than crusades. He drinks hard, dresses sharp, and prefers the department to function quietly rather than blow up for anyone's principles.

Wendell Pierce plays him as the show's ballast — funny, profane, and genuinely gifted at the job, a counterweight to McNulty's self-destructive righteousness. The writing lets him be both a brilliant interrogator and a flawed, boozy friend without ever flattening him into either. His loyalty feels lived-in, not written.
