Det. Ellis Carver

Carver is a Baltimore narcotics detective, ambitious and a little cynical, more interested in overtime pay and looking good on paper than in any grand notion of police work. He runs with Herc as a partner in low-effort corner busts, quick to cut corners and slow to think about consequences until they land on him.

What makes Carver worth following is the arc the writing lets him earn without ever making it feel like a lecture: a lazy, self-serving cop who slowly, plausibly starts to absorb what real police work costs and means. Gilliam plays the shift in small increments — a wince here, a held silence there — so growth looks lived-in rather than scripted.
