Same appetite for terrible people doing terrible things played for maximum laughs, minus the sentiment. If Frank had four friends and no children to worry about, this is what he'd become.

But There's no emotional floor here at all — if you liked Shameless for its heart, this show has deliberately removed one.

Six Feet Under2001

A family in crisis, one darkly funny, self-destructive kid after another, and a willingness to sit in genuine grief without flinching. The Gallaghers' more articulate, upper-middle-class cousins.

But Much slower and more meditative — it wants you to think about mortality, not just laugh at the fallout of a bad decision.

Roseanne1988

The working-class-family sitcom that made room for everything Shameless does later — money trouble, messy parenting, kids who talk back and mean it, all wrapped in real affection.

But A studio-audience sitcom rhythm that feels tame and old-fashioned next to Shameless's rawer, unfiltered chaos.

Bicycle Thieves1948

Decades before Shameless made poverty entertaining, this film insisted on showing it plainly — the same clear-eyed look at what desperation does to a family, stripped of every modern comic cushion.

Italian neorealism's masterpiece about a father and son navigating poverty in postwar Rome with nothing but each other — unglamorous, unsentimental, devastating.

But Black and white, subtitled, seventy-plus years old, and completely without jokes — a real tonal 180 from Shameless.

The Wire2002

Poverty, addiction and institutional failure treated with total seriousness across a whole city, if you want the Gallaghers' world zoomed out to systemic scale.

But Almost no comedy, a huge cast to track, and a slow burn — this asks for patience Shameless never does.

Animal Kingdom2016

Siblings raised by a chaotic, criminal parental figure, forced to fend for themselves and each other — same family-as-survival-unit engine, dialed up into crime drama.

But Trades the comedy almost entirely for tension and menace; this is a much colder watch.

Kevin Can F**k Himself2021no page yet

A formally inventive show about the wreckage a selfish, oblivious man leaves behind, told from the woman's perspective he never bothers to see clearly. Sharp, angry, funny.

But Only two seasons and a stylistic gimmick — sitcom scenes bleeding into grim reality — that some find distracting rather than clever.

My Name Is Earl2005

Working-class chaos, a deeply flawed lead trying (sort of) to do better, and a scrappy found-family warmth underneath the mess. Lighter, but from the same neighborhood.

But Far gentler and more consequence-free — nobody here is really in danger the way the Gallaghers are.

Justified2010

Poverty, family loyalty, and the pull of where you're from, filtered through Elmore Leonard's crackling dialogue and a modern-day Western frame. Great company for the long haul.

But A genre shift into crime procedural — if you came to Shameless for domestic chaos, this is a different animal entirely.

Stevie2003

Same raw material as the Gallaghers — a kid failed by every adult around him — but documentary instead of drama, and there's no writers' room to guarantee he gets a break.

A documentary from the director of Hoop Dreams, following a neglected rural Illinois kid he once mentored, now grown and in serious trouble. Unflinching, complicated, deeply humane.

But This is real, not staged for laughs — the neglect and its consequences are genuinely upsetting, with no comic relief to soften it.

Winter's Bone2010

Take Fiona's role — oldest kid effectively raising the family while the parent fails them — and strip out every joke; this is what that job looks like when nobody's writing you punchlines.

A teenage girl in the Ozarks holds her family together while hunting for her vanished, drug-cooking father — a quiet, fierce performance from a young Jennifer Lawrence.

But Grim and slow-burning with almost no humor, and the poverty here is filmed for dread, not comedy.
