Television series

21 Jump Street

Other titles called 21 Jump Street: the 2012 film.

A syndicated drama about young undercover cops infiltrating high schools to solve crimes and tackle teen issues. It's taut procedural storytelling with moral weight, anchored by charismatic ensemble work. Built to appeal equally to action fans and viewers who wanted their crime shows to mean something.

Miami Vice1984

Stylish crime procedural that proved TV drama could be visually ambitious and thematically sophisticated. Don Johnsons charisma carries investigations through the cocaine trade with real emotional stakes and cultural urgency.

But Eighties excess can feel overwrought now. Some cases drag. The synth score, while iconic, hasn't aged as kindly as the show itself.

Wiseguy1987

Arc-based crime drama where each season follows a single deep-cover operation. Builds genuine tension through procedural detail and the psychological toll of living a lie. Tzi Ma and Kevin Spacey deliver career-best work.

But Pacing can be glacial. Long commitment required to payoff. Some arcs outstay their welcome by design.

Moonlight2007

Stunningly composed three-part structure about young Black men in Miami. Intimate, poetic, visually ravishing. Captures adolescent vulnerability with rare honesty and beauty. A masterclass in filmmaking.

But Not a crime drama at all—deeply introspective. Very slow. Some find it mournful rather than uplifting. Only six hours total.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

My So-Called Life1994

Both centre young people navigating high school as the real drama; both treat teen life as genuine, not setup for adult stories. Both acknowledge that what happens at sixteen matters.

High school drama that treats adolescent emotional life with radical seriousness. Claire Danes and Jared Leto as characters wrestling with identity, desire, morality in real time. No easy answers. Visually inventive. One perfect season.

But Cancelled after nineteen episodes—deeply unsatisfying ending. Melodramatic to modern eyes. Slow by current standards. Angela's voice-over can grate.

Bosch2015

Lean detective procedural respecting its audience's intelligence. Titus Welliver's Bosch investigates with methodical intensity. Plots are genuinely intricate without sacrificing character development. Each season satisfies.

But Takes itself very seriously—no levity. Formulaic by design. Ensemble gets sidelined. If you want fun, look elsewhere.

The Wire2002

Monumental crime drama mapping Baltimore's systems: drug trade, education, politics, media. Interlocking cases reveal structural realities. Ensemble cast working at the height of their powers. Television's best argument for itself.

But Deliberately paced. You must pay attention every moment. Demands your time across five seasons. No shortcuts, no mercy.

Southland2009

Gritty Los Angeles police procedural balancing action with real consequence. Multiple cases per episode build a city rather than solve crimes. Cast chemistry is exceptional. Never patronizes its audience.

But Inconsistent; quality wavers between seasons. Some character arcs resolve unsatisfyingly. Cancelled at five seasons just as it was recovering.

Hill Street Blues1981

Groundbreaking ensemble cop drama that influenced everything after. Weaves multiple cases across a precinct with earned emotion. Daniel J. Travanti anchors a cast that felt revolutionary in its diversity and depth.

But Early-eighties production values are dated. Some storylines feel quaint now. Pacing assumes patience. Pilot is slow.

NYPD Blue1993

Detective procedural with real roughness—raw language, complicated characters, visual inventiveness. Dennis Franz and David Caruso investigate with messy humanity. Shonda Rhimes learned from this. It mattered.

But Unevenly written. Later seasons lose focus. Caruso's casting was controversial and divisive. Some plots feel dated now.

Homicide: Life on the Street1993

Baltimore homicide squad balancing dark humour with genuine tragedy. Andre Braugher is transcendent. Cases anchor character study. Willing to be funny and heartbreaking in the same scene. Television at its most human.

But Tonal whiplash bothers some viewers. Final seasons decline. Loves its ensemble so much secondary characters get lost. Cancellation was abrupt.

Homicide: Life on the Street poster

Clockers1995

Both examine how young people become entangled in criminal systems; both refuse simple morality. Both suggest individuals are caught in larger machinery, not simply choosing evil.

Spike Lee's drug trade drama following Brooklyn dealers with anthropological precision. Brutally unsentimental about systemic failure. Mekhi Phifer and Isaiah Washington anchor a story that indicts structures, not individuals. Formally inventive.

But Densely plotted; easy to lose thread. Violence is unflinching. No cathartic resolution. Feels like a documentary some scenes. Deliberately bleak throughout.

Dazed and Confused1993

Like 21 Jump Street, finds drama and humour in the textures of youth culture itself—how teenagers actually talk, dress, group, rebel. Both trust ensemble ensemble work over star power. Both are affectionate toward their characters.

Richard Linklater's ensemble comedy about the last day of school in 1976 Texas. Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Parker Posey navigating adolescence with genuine warmth. Funny without cruelty. Captures authentic teen life.

But Nothing happens. Relies on chemistry and mood, not plot. Very much a seventies hangout movie. If you need narrative propulsion, it'll frustrate you. Episodic to the point of formlessness.
