Det. Roland "Prez" Pryzbylewski

Prez arrives as a mess: a patrol cop with a bad shooting incident already behind him, prone to violence and careless with a badge, dumped into the detail because nobody else wants him. He's awkward, thin-skinned, and seems like a punchline waiting to happen rather than a detective.

The show uses him as a trap for the viewer's contempt, then quietly dismantles it. David Simon's writing keeps finding the one thing Prez is actually good at — patient, unglamorous work — and Jim True-Frost plays the surprise of competence without ever overplaying it, so his growth feels earned rather than sentimental.
