Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like haunted-house chills built on dread and sound design rather than gore, and don't mind a film that slowly tightens its grip before it turns loud.

Skip it if you tire quickly of jump scares, since loud stings do much of the heavy lifting and the frights arrive in predictable bursts.

What it asks of you: Expect a brisk ninety-odd minutes that build patiently through quiet domestic unease before the noise arrives, so give it your full attention in a dark room.

Carnival of Souls1962

Insidious's 'Further' — a grey astral limbo full of wandering dead and one lurking demon — is essentially a modern remake of this film's premise. Wan has cited it as an influence; watch the original and you'll see exactly where that dead space came from.

A low-budget, black-and-white ghost story about a woman drifting through a world that feels subtly wrong — dreamlike, eerie organ score, and images that clearly seeded decades of horror.

But Slow, cheap, and unpolished by modern standards — the scares are tonal, not visceral, and some will find it stranger than scary.

Poltergeist1982

The genre's great suburban haunting, with practical effects that still unsettle and a family dynamic that clearly influenced the Lamberts. Spielberg's warmth is all over it.

But It's PG-rated 80s horror — scary in a gentler, more atmospheric register than the visceral jolts you might want.

A Nightmare on Elm Street1984

Wes Craven's original nightmare-logic slasher, where falling asleep is the danger — a direct ancestor to Insidious's idea that the real threat waits on the other side of consciousness.

But Freddy's persona drifts from menacing to campy across the runtime, and some of the effects show their age.

Dalton's endless sleep and the demon waiting in the astral realm isn't invented from nothing — it's sleep paralysis mythology dressed as horror. This documentary interviews the real people describing almost exactly what Insidious dramatises.

A documentary of sleep paralysis sufferers describing shadow figures who sit on their chest and try to pull them somewhere else — the dramatised reenactments rival horror cinema for dread.

But There's no plot and no scares built for release — it's real testimony, which some find harder to shake off than fiction, others less satisfying.

Paprika2006

Same idea, opposite costume: someone travels into a liminal dream realm and is pursued by figures that shouldn't exist there. Insidious plays that structure as horror; Paprika plays the identical idea as psychedelic sci-fi.

A dazzling, deeply strange anime about a device that lets people enter each other's dreams — gorgeous, unsettling, and years ahead of Inception in imagining dream-space as a place to be chased through.

But It's abstract and hallucinatory rather than scary — no jump scares, and the emotional logic can be hard to track on first watch.
