A couple installs a camera in their bedroom after strange things start happening at night, and that's basically the whole premise. No score, no jump-scare orchestra stabs, just a static shot of a room slowly becoming the most frightening thing you've ever watched. It's patient, cheap, and devastatingly effective for anyone who can sit still and let dread build rather than demanding it be delivered.

It's found footage before found footage existed, using the same trick as Paranormal Activity — convincing you the recording device itself is proof — but delivered as a national television event instead of a rented camcorder.

A BBC drama presented as a live television broadcast of a haunted-house investigation, so convincing it caused a real national panic and switchboard meltdown on air.

But The presentation style is very British-TV-1992, and some of what made it terrifying then — the illusion of live broadcast — you now have to imagine rather than feel.

Spanish found-footage horror that starts as a news crew's ride-along and turns into a claustrophobic nightmare — relentless where Paranormal Activity is patient.

But It's a full sprint rather than a slow creep, so if you liked PA's stillness this may feel like a different genre.

Sinister2012

A family moves into a house with a terrible history and old home movies start revealing why — genuinely unsettling and built on the same dread of what's caught on tape.

But Ethan Hawke's character makes some spectacularly bad decisions that may test your patience.

An Australian mockumentary about a family investigating their daughter's death that becomes something far stranger — quiet, mournful, and one of the most underrated horror films of its decade.

But It's slow even by PA standards and more sad than scary for long stretches.

What We Do in the Shadows2014

Same structural idea as Paranormal Activity — a static camera crew documenting the mundane home life of something not-quite-human — but the register flips from dread to comedy, proving the format is genre-agnostic.

A mockumentary about vampire flatmates in Wellington, filmed with the same fly-on-the-wall intimacy, except every ordinary domestic annoyance is played for huge laughs instead of dread.

But If you came for scares, this offers none — it's a comedy through and through, just wearing the same clothes.

The Haunting1963

Decades before found footage existed, this proved the same core idea Paranormal Activity relies on — that the scariest haunted house film is the one that withholds the monster and trusts your imagination to do the work.

A team investigates a house believed to be haunted and the film never once shows you a ghost, relying entirely on sound, shadow, and a breathing wall to terrify.

But It's a much stagier, more theatrical kind of horror, all black-and-white composition and dialogue rather than PA's stripped-down realism.
