Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files
- Mystery
- Dip in and out
A former FBI agent leads a scrappy team dissecting viral paranormal videos and photos to separate hoax from genuine mystery. They lab-test claims, interview witnesses, and recreate scenarios with impressive practical effects. It's earnest investigative theatre—less about proving ghosts exist and more about the satisfying work of debunking, with enough ambiguous cases left unsolved to keep you wondering.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like watching a grainy viral photo get pulled apart frame by frame, and enjoy the slow satisfaction of a skeptic's checklist turning up either a hoax or something stranger.
Skip it if you find the case-of-the-week format repetitive, since 3D reconstructions and gadget demos can pad out each hour-long episode.
What it asks of you: Each episode runs about an hour, and the 36 installments unfold at a measured pace that lingers on tests and interviews rather than rushing toward scares.

Mythbusters2003
Same DNA: a charismatic leader, a skilled team, and methodical experiments to test wild claims. The appeal is watching smart people think sideways and admit when they're wrong.
But Loses momentum in later seasons. Some episodes feel stretched to fill time, and the formula can feel repetitive.

Paranormal Activity2007
Low-budget found footage that actually works—creeping dread without jump scares, and the kind of ambiguous ending that will make you interrogate every frame.
But Deliberately slow-burn. Long stretches of nothing happening. The ending divides people sharply.

The X-Files1993
Mulder and Scully investigate the impossible with real chemistry and wit. Paranormal investigation at its most romantic—the cases matter less than watching them work together.
But Sprawls across nine seasons with some truly dead episodes. The mythology arc becomes a mess.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Ghostwatch1992
Both present paranormal investigation as procedural and real-time. Ghostwatch just did it first, without the lab work, and it scared an entire nation into thinking it was actual broadcast TV.
A mockumentary presented as a live BBC paranormal investigation that aired on live television in the UK and caused genuine panic. It's the ancestor of found footage, done with style and real craft.
But The first half is deliberately slow pacing disguised as realism. Low budget means low gore, which some viewers mistake for low stakes.

Unsolved Mysteries2020
The template for everything that followed. Eerie, respectful, genuinely unresolved. Robert Stack's narration alone is worth the evening.
But Some cases are decades old and feel dated. The production quality varies wildly between episodes.

The Invisible Man1975
Taut psychological thriller masquerading as a sci-fi story. Elisabeth Moss is magnetic, and the sound design does more work than the visuals.
But Only two seasons before cancellation. The premise, however clever, runs its course quickly.

Poltergeist1982
A family terrorized in their own home by something they can't see or understand. Spielberg-produced, genuinely unsettling, and the effects still hold up.
But Dated special effects occasionally break the spell. The third act leans into spectacle over dread.

A Serious Man2009
The Coen Brothers deconstruct paranoia and faith. Dark, funny, deeply strange. Nothing is explained and that's the point.
But Deliberately frustrating. You will not feel satisfied by the ending, and that's intentional.

Dark2017
A German series that builds a mythology slowly, rewarding close attention. Time loops, missing children, and a town keeping secrets that compound across four seasons.
But Requires patience and note-taking. Gets genuinely complex by season three. Subtitled.

In Search of Darkness2019
A documentary series celebrating 1980s horror with genuine affection and serious filmmaking craft. Interviews with directors and retrospective depth.
But Extremely long and thorough. You need to care about '80s horror to justify the runtime.

The Midnight Sky2020
Both use scientific method to approach mysteries, but where Fact or Faked demystifies, this film deepens mystery into existential dread. One answers questions; the other asks bigger ones.
A haunting science-fiction mystery about isolation, communication across vast distances, and questioning what's real when you're alone. Visually stunning, quietly eerie, emotionally devastating.
But Slow, meditative, and sad. No real scares, no jump beats. Needs silence to work.
