Ghost Hunters

Ghost Hunters follows two Rhode Island plumbers-turned-paranormal-investigators as they haul thermal cameras and EMF meters into allegedly haunted houses, forts and asylums, hunting for evidence rather than theatrics. It's slow, procedural, oddly soothing television — more stakeout than séance. The appeal is the blue-collar sincerity: these are guys who genuinely try to debunk before they believe, which makes the rare unexplained moment land harder.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you enjoy reality shows where ordinary people with modest gear and a lot of nerve creep through dark buildings, and you like the suspense of waiting for a noise that might or might not mean something.

Skip it if you want scripted scares or a story that builds toward answers, since most episodes end unresolved and the drama depends on people arguing over readings and what they think they heard.

What it asks of you: Each episode runs about an hour, mostly at a patient pace of walking, talking and waiting in the dark, so it rewards a steady, unhurried attention rather than constant payoff.

Ghost Adventures2008

Zak Bagans takes the same premise and cranks the intensity way up — lockdowns in abandoned prisons and asylums, real fear on camera, less procedural calm and more full-body dread. The genre's most committed showman.

But The reactions can feel performative, and the constant screaming and jump-cuts wear thin over multiple seasons.

Destination Truth2007

Josh Gates trades haunted houses for cryptids and legends across the globe, chasing chupacabras and lake monsters with the same gadget-heavy sincerity but a much bigger sense of humour about the whole enterprise.

But It's broader and goofier — less about dread in a specific room, more a fun travelogue with occasional scares.

Paranormal State2007

A Penn State student club investigates hauntings with the same earnest, unglamorous approach, but younger and slightly more willing to lean into demonic and religious explanations for what they find.

But The cast is less charismatic, and some episodes tip further into faith-based explanation than skeptics might like.

The wildcard

Something you would not have found on your own.

In Search of.....1977

It's the ancestor of the whole genre — same appetite for the unexplained, same claim to investigate rather than entertain, but with a documentary calm Ghost Hunters traded for adrenaline.

Leonard Nimoy's hushed narration guides you through UFOs, Bigfoot, Atlantis and hauntings decades before reality TV existed — measured, archival, genuinely eerie in its restraint rather than its jump-scares.

But The pacing is glacial by modern standards, and the 1970s production values are charmingly, sometimes distractingly, dated.

Kindred Spirits2016

TAPS alum Amy Bruni spins off with a partner and a warmer, more personal touch — genuinely moving conversations with families who just want someone to believe them.

But Lower budget, smaller crew, and the investigative gear is thinner than the original show's arsenal.

Celebrity Ghost Stories2009

Famous faces recount their own brushes with the unexplained, unpolished and first-person — no gear, no team, just people you recognise describing what genuinely spooked them.

But No investigation at all, just testimony — if you liked the hunting part, this drops it entirely.

The Dead Files2011

A skeptical retired detective and a psychic investigate the same haunted house separately, then compare notes — a clever structural twist that keeps both sides honest.

But The reveal format repeats itself hard after a few episodes, and the psychic segments can feel padded.

Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files2010

A team re-creates viral ghost and UFO videos to test whether they could be faked — a satisfying, hands-on companion piece for anyone who likes the forensic angle of the genre.

But It's more about hoax debunking than atmosphere, so the creeping dread of a haunted-house walkthrough is mostly absent.

Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files poster

Haunted Collector2011

A paranormal investigator believes haunted objects, not places, are the problem, and tracks down cursed antiques room by room — a neat little variation on the usual formula.

But The premise wears thin fast, and the show never quite escaped charges of staged evidence.

My Ghost Story2010

An anthology of ordinary people's haunting accounts, re-enacted and narrated — good comfort-food viewing when you want the genre in its calmest, least demanding form.

But Cheap re-enactments and a repetitive structure make it the least essential entry on this list.

Catfish: The TV Show2012

Same investigative engine and emotional payoff — ordinary people using technology and doorstep confrontations to solve a mystery someone else is too scared to face alone.

Nev and Max investigate online relationships with laptops and phone records instead of EMF meters, but the structure is identical: a claim, a team, evidence gathered on camera, a verdict delivered to someone desperate for the truth.

But The 'haunting' here is emotional manipulation, not the supernatural — if you specifically want spooky, this won't scratch that itch.

The Nightmare2015

Same core subject — the felt presence of something in the dark — but stripped of every procedural comfort Ghost Hunters offers, leaving just the raw experience the show spends its runtime trying to verify.

A documentary about sleep paralysis that treats the sensation of a malevolent presence in your bedroom with total seriousness — no gadgets, no skepticism, just testimony and dramatized re-enactments that actually unsettle.

But It's genuinely unnerving rather than fun, and offers no reassuring debunking — the dread is the point, and nothing gets resolved.
