The Maid
Other titles called The Maid: the 2005 film, the 2009 film.
A Thai haunted-house thriller where a new maid investigates the disappearance of her predecessor, who now seems determined to destroy the family she once served. It's a slow-burn mystery wrapped in genuine dread, anchored by committed performances and the claustrophobic tension of servants navigating a grand household's secrets. For those who prize atmosphere over jump scares.
Should you watch it?
Watch it if you like slow-burning ghost stories where the dread is built from a household's secrets and class tensions, and a mystery you have to piece together yourself.
Skip it if you want fast scares or a neatly tied-up answer, because this one lingers on atmosphere and dread rather than jolts, and it moves at a deliberate pace.
What it asks of you: Expect a feature-length build of unease, around an hour and forty minutes, where you must hold onto small details and keep track of who knows what.

The Wailing2016
A Korean mystery-thriller that builds the same kind of suffocating uncertainty—nothing is quite what it seems, and you're never sure who to trust or what's really happening beneath the surface.
But It's 2h 36m and deliberately cryptic, with an ending that refuses easy answers. Some will find it frustratingly oblique.

A Tale of Two Sisters2003
A Korean horror film that uses a haunted house to explore family trauma and twisted grief. Like The Maid, it's concerned with what ghosts represent rather than where they hide.
But The narrative structure is fractured and dreamlike, which some read as genius and others find confusing or slow.

Shutter2004
A Thai ghost story where photography and guilt collide. It has that same creeping dread and the same willingness to implicate everyone, not just the obvious villain.
But The premise relies on a twist that, once known, diminishes on rewatching. And the final beat is bleak in a way that doesn't feel earned to everyone.

The wildcard
Something you would not have found on your own.
Mulholland Drive2001
Both films weaponize mystery as a form of dread. Neither tells you what happened or why; both make the unknowing itself terrifying. They trust the audience to sit with discomfort rather than resolve it.
A Lynch masterpiece about performance, identity, and who holds power in a closed world. Like The Maid, it's obsessed with the gap between what we see and what's true, and with the violence hidden in hierarchies.
But It's 2h 27m of intentional ambiguity that some find transcendent and others find maddening. You have to surrender to it.

The Orphanage2007
A Spanish haunted-house film that plays similar games with perception and reality. It trusts the audience's intelligence and builds to genuine tragedy rather than just scares.
But It's more melancholy than thrilling, and the emotional climax matters far more than any of the horror beats.

Insidious2011
This one leans into the supernatural more directly, but shares The Maid's interest in something wrong at the heart of a home, and a protagonist trying to understand what they're dealing with.
But It's far more conventional and American, with clearer scares. If you want subtlety, you'll be frustrated by how direct it becomes.

Oculus2014
A mirror becomes the focus of obsession and investigation. Like The Maid, it's about unstable reality and the unreliability of what you're seeing, wrapped in real psychological tension.
But The non-linear narrative structure takes effort to follow, and some will find the circular logic of the plot infuriating rather than clever.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle2019
A strange, quiet thriller about a girl, her family, and a community's unspoken accusations. It has The Maid's interest in servants and outsiders and what people are really guilty of.
But It's deliberately paced and peculiar in ways that won't click for everyone. The tone is arch and affected, which reads precious to some.

The Invisible Man2020
Released the same year as The Maid, this reimagines its source material as a claustrophobic psychological thriller about gaslighting and control within the home.
But It's a very contemporary reading of the story, with heavy thematic freight. Those wanting classic monster-movie thrills will feel lectured at.

Under the Skin2014
Another slow-burn mystery where something is very wrong but we're kept in the dark. It trusts atmosphere and unease over explanation, with genuinely unsettling imagery.
But There's almost no plot or dialogue. If you need narrative momentum and clear stakes, you will be bored or frustrated within twenty minutes.

Servant2019
Both examine the relationship between employer and employee as a kind of intimate haunting, where you never quite know who is haunting whom, or whether anyone is really in control.
An Apple TV+ miniseries about a couple and the mysterious young woman they hire to care for their home. It has The Maid's interest in service, surveillance, and the eroticism of control, but goes far stranger and darker than the film.
But It gets increasingly surreal and sometimes derivative of its own shock value. The finale divides people sharply on whether it earned what it was building.

Onibaba1964
Both films are genuinely interested in the interior lives of women with no power, and what they do with the little agency they possess. Both make the haunting internal, psychological, rather than supernatural.
A Japanese masterpiece: a woman and her daughter-in-law lure soldiers to their deaths in a swamp during wartime. It's hypnotic, carnal, and morally murky—horror built from the banality of survival and betrayal.
But It's in black and white with a very different pace and sensibility. The gender dynamics will feel strange or offensive to modern eyes without context.
