Little Evil
A horror-comedy about a well-meaning stepfather who discovers his new wife's son might literally be the Antichrist. It's genial chaos: genuinely creepy moments undercut by absurdist humour, anchored by Adam Scott's befuddled everyman energy. For people who like their scares funny and their comedy just dark enough to bite.

Insidious2011
A masterclass in building dread through ordinary family life. James Wan sculpts pure atmospheric tension from a haunted house setup, with genuine jump scares that earn their moments rather than cheating.
But The third act shifts into action-heavy territory that deflates some of the slow-burn terror. Once you see what's actually there, it's less scary.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil2010
A horror-comedy that flips the script with real wit and heart. Two hillbillies mistaken for killers; the genre conventions get systematically dismantled. Genuinely funny and surprisingly touching.
But The premise is more clever than the execution. Once you see where it's going, the surprises start to flatten out.

What We Do in the Shadows2014
Mockumentary about vampires living in Wellington. Taika Waititi and Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement create a comedy that's laugh-out-loud funny while treating absurdity with total sincerity. Vampires have never been this endearing.
But The humour is deadpan and occasionally slow-burning. If you need immediate laughs, this requires patience to reward you.

The Wailing2016
Both use domestic family spaces as the battleground for supernatural evil, and both trust the audience to sit with uncertainty rather than giving them comfort.
A South Korean mystery about a priest, a detective, and a demonic infestation in a small village. It's ambitious, genuinely disturbing, and refuses easy answers. The genre-blending feels purposeful: horror, crime procedural, and philosophy tangled together. Na Hong-jin builds dread through moral ambiguity rather than jump scares.
But It runs nearly three hours and demands genuine attention. The ending is deliberately ambiguous in ways that frustrate people who want resolution. Not a crowd-pleaser.

Drag Me to Hell2009
Sam Raimi's supernatural horror-comedy fizzes with invention. A loan officer cursed by a vengeful old woman. It's grotesque and ridiculous and incredibly entertaining, powered by visceral practical effects and genuine scares.
But The tone whiplash between horror and comedy can feel jarring. Some find it tries too hard to please everyone at once.

My Happy Family2017
A Russian horror-comedy about a family plagued by a demonic presence. Anarchic energy, inventive gore gags, and real affection for its dysfunctional characters. Funny and unsettling in equal measure.
But Subtitled. The pacing is chaotic, which works for the mood but demands active attention.

Tremors1990
Desert town terrorised by underground worm creatures. Perfect genre balance: proper scares, genuine laughs, and characters you actually like. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward have real chemistry, and the script is sharper than it has any right to be.
But The creature design can look dated depending on your comfort with practical effects. Some find it leans comedy over horror by the final act.

The Addams Family1991
Gothic comedy about a twisted family that's genuinely witty for adults and genuinely fun for kids. Barry Sonnenfeld directs with sumptuous production design. It loves its weirdos completely, without mockery.
But If you've seen it before, the gags don't hold up as fresh. It's a comfortable rewatch rather than a discovery.

The Babysitter2017
A babysitter trying to kill a kid she's been hired to watch. Cartoonish violence, an 80s-inflected soundtrack, genuine suspense underneath the absurdity. McG makes something purely kinetic and fun.
But It's more style than substance. The plot is paper-thin, and if you're looking for real character depth, you'll leave disappointed.

Krampus2015
Christmas horror about a family facing the dark side of the holiday. Creature design is inventive, the atmosphere is genuinely creepy, and it treats its premise with enough sincerity to make it work.
But The tonal shifts between family chaos and genuine horror can feel uneven. Some sequences are slow and drag the momentum.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale2010
Like Little Evil, it takes childhood mythology—here Santa instead of the Antichrist—and inverts it into something truly unsettling, using that perversion as both the comedy and the horror.
A Finnish film about a mining operation that accidentally unleashes Santa Claus as an ancient, malevolent entity. Genuinely original, darkly funny, visually striking. It treats its absurd premise with complete seriousness, which is exactly what makes it work.
But Subtitled, and the pacing is deliberate. Some find the quirk overcooks the horror elements. It's a niche film that won't appeal to mainstream tastes.

Hereditary2018
Both explore how evil infiltrates family structures and tests a parent's ability to protect their child, but Hereditary strips away all comedy to show what that scenario looks like if there's no escape route.
A family falls apart after the matriarch dies, and something far worse takes her place. It's operatic and devastating—genuinely terrifying supernatural horror that's also a portrait of intergenerational trauma. Ari Aster refuses compromise; this is the real thing.
But Bleak and slow-burn to the point of exhaustion. It privileges dread over entertainment. Some find it punishing rather than rewarding, and the ending pushes into territory many will find alienating.
