Captain Blood

This is the film that made Errol Flynn a star overnight, and you can feel it happening in real time — every leap, grin and rapier flourish landing like he's discovering his own charisma along with the audience. It's brisk, unpretentious 1930s studio adventure: wronged man, tall ships, a romance with Olivia de Havilland crackling even in its most chaste moments. Pure swagger, pure fun.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love old-fashioned swashbuckling, where a gentleman's sense of honour gets tested on a rolling deck and a swordfight doubles as a form of flirtation.

Skip it if you find 1930s studio filmmaking creaky, or want modern pacing; action comes in bursts between long talky stretches, and the romance stays chaste and polite.

What it asks of you: Just under two hours of steady incident, moving briskly from one set piece to the next, with a tone that stays buoyant even when the stakes turn grim.

Flynn and de Havilland reunite, in colour this time, for what is simply the finest swashbuckler ever made — funnier, faster and more confident than Blood.

But If you want more of the same story beats rather than a step up in polish, this might feel like a remake of a vibe you just had.

The Sea Hawk1940

Flynn back on a ship with director Michael Curtiz, darker and more political this time, with Errol Flynn navy pirate fighting the Spanish Armada, and Korngold's score doing half the work.

But It's longer and more solemn, with less of the giddy romance — the fun is more clenched-jaw than devil-may-care.

Stewart Granger plays a wrongly-pursued man who turns swordsman for revenge, building to what many call the longest and best duel ever filmed.

But It's Technicolor MGM gloss rather than Warner Bros grit — glossier, safer, a touch less rough around the edges.

The Black Pirate1926

Flynn's entire screen persona was built as a direct answer to Fairbanks; watching this is watching the blueprint Captain Blood was drawn from.

Douglas Fairbanks — the swashbuckler Flynn was consciously imitating — leaps and duels his way through an early two-colour Technicolor pirate epic that basically wrote the genre's rulebook.

But It's silent, and the melodrama is broader and more stylised than anything in the sound era; patience with title cards required.

The Mark of Zorro1940

Tyrone Power's masked avenger has the same secret-identity swagger and rapier wit, with Basil Rathbone again supplying a superb villain to duel.

But The pacing is slower and more theatrical, closer to costume drama than open-sea adventure.

The Crimson Pirate1952

Burt Lancaster, an actual former acrobat, turns swashbuckling into something almost slapstick — gleeful, self-aware, gorgeous to look at.

But It knows it's silly and leans into parody, so if you want Blood's sincerity this plays as a wink instead.

The Three Musketeers1948

Gene Kelly choreographs the swordplay like dance numbers, and the film has the same breathless, youthful energy that made Flynn a star.

But It's busier and more comic than Blood, with less room for the romantic melodrama at the story's core.

Treasure Island1950

Robert Newton's Long John Silver basically invented the modern idea of a pirate, and this Disney version is tighter and more purely adventurous than most.

But It's aimed younger, with none of the courtroom injustice or slow-burn romance that gives Blood its backbone.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl2003

A modern blockbuster built on the same bones — wronged man, stolen ship, a heroine who can hold her own — with real wit under the CGI.

But It's a different animal tonally, closer to theme-park spectacle than the theatrical restraint of the 1930s original.

Cutthroat Island1995

A genuinely enjoyable, gleefully overstuffed pirate romp with Geena Davis as a rare female lead swashbuckler, if you're willing to forgive its excesses.

But It bombed for a reason — the plotting is loose and the tone lurches, so go in with modest expectations.

The Pirates of Penzance1983

Same century, same swashbuckling clichés Blood plays straight — honourable pirates, stolen brides, noble outlaws — but sent up rather than celebrated.

Kevin Kline leads a filmed version of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta, which takes the exact same pirate-romance furniture and turns it into absurdist musical comedy.

But If you don't care for operetta or musicals, the singing and satire will grate rather than delight.

The Shawshank Redemption1994

Both are, underneath the surface trappings, stories about a good man unjustly caged who reclaims his freedom and dignity through wit rather than rage.

A wrongly convicted man endures unjust imprisonment and slowly, patiently builds his own escape and reinvention — the same emotional engine as Blood, stripped of the swordfights.

But It's a slow, serious prison drama with none of the swagger or romance; if you came for adventure, this will feel like a different genre entirely.
