Lancaster built his entire performance as a deliberate homage to Fairbanks's stunt-driven silent swashbucklers — this is the source he's tipping his hat to.

Douglas Fairbanks, the original acrobat-swashbuckler, swinging from masts and grinning through an early Technicolor spectacle that Crimson Pirate is essentially saluting.

But Silent, so the jokes land through physicality alone — no quips, no dialogue, just pure derring-do.
