A jittery romance novelist gets dragged from her Manhattan apartment into the actual pulp adventure she's spent her career writing — jungle, mercenaries, a smuggler with a gun and a smirk, a lost emerald. It's fast, funny, a little dumb in the best way, and Turner and Douglas have the kind of chemistry that makes the plot feel beside the point. Pure comfort-watch swashbuckle for anyone who likes their romance with mud on it.

Should you watch it?

Watch it if you love a light adventure that plays like a romantic caper, with a sharp-tongued heroine, a cheerfully cynical sidekick and jungle chases that are more giddy than grim.

Skip it if you want a tense, gritty survival story or find broad slapstick and cheesy 1980s action wearing thin, since the jokes and set pieces lean on sheer goofiness.

What it asks of you: Roughly an hour and three-quarters with brisk pacing, a mostly easygoing tone, and little demand beyond following the banter and the scrapes it throws at its leads.

Something you would not have found on your own.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God1972

Strip the jokes and the meet-cute banter from Romancing the Stone's jungle-treasure plot and you're left with this: obsessive outsiders destroyed by the same landscape Joan and Jack merely survive with a smile.

Klaus Kinski leads a doomed expedition into the South American jungle chasing a lost city of gold — the exact same premise as Stone's treasure hunt, filmed as a fever dream of madness and colonial rot.

But There is no comedy here, no romance, no rescue — it's slow, hallucinatory, and genuinely disturbing by design.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom1984

Same year, same pulpy energy, another mismatched pair stumbling through peril for treasure. Darker and grimier than Raiders, closer in tone to Stone's jungle chaos.

But Notoriously mean-spirited in places — the tone swings harder toward horror than romance ever does.

The Mummy1999

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz do the reluctant-rogue-meets-bookish-woman dance across a cursed desert with the same wink-to-camera confidence Douglas and Turner had in the jungle.

But More horror-adventure than romantic comedy — the scares are played straighter than anything in Stone.

Treasure map, exes forced together, tropical setting, zero pretensions — it's basically Romancing the Stone with sand instead of jungle and a lot less bite.

But Black and white, decades removed in style and pace, and the 'adventure' is a road trip, not a jungle.
