Should you watch it?

Watch it if you like paranoid 1970s thrillers where the tension comes from doubt and quiet procedure rather than explosions, and you enjoy watching a bookish man slowly realise he is out of his depth.

Skip it if you want a brisk, action-heavy chase; this one spends long stretches in conversation and waiting, and its suspense builds at a deliberate, unhurried pace.

What it asks of you: Settle in for just under two hours of patient, talky material, with the menace accumulating through small moments rather than constant jolts; it rewards attention more than it rewards restlessness.

Condor's whole engine—an institution turned predator, an ordinary man realizing the enemy might be inside his own agency—was assembled here first, thirteen years before Redford ran through Manhattan.

The Cold War thriller that invented the 'trust no one, not even your own side' plot Condor would later run with—brainwashing, hidden agents, and Angela Lansbury as one of cinema's great villains.

But The black-and-white photography and 1962 pacing will feel slow and stagey to viewers used to modern editing rhythms.

The real-life version of Condor's nightmare, filmed as it happened: Edward Snowden, holed up in a Hong Kong hotel room, explaining exactly how far the surveillance apparatus actually reaches.

But It's a documentary with none of the fiction's shape or release—talking heads and hotel rooms, not chases and confrontations.

Burn After Reading2008

It's Condor's plot skeleton—innocuous government employee finds themselves in over their head with dangerous people—rebuilt as farce, proving how thin the line is between paranoid thriller and absurd comedy.

The Coen brothers take the exact CIA-analyst-stumbles-into-a-conspiracy premise and run it through a wood chipper of stupidity and bad luck—same machinery, played entirely for laughs.

But If you want the paranoia played straight, this will feel like a betrayal—everyone here is an idiot, on purpose.
